Cool Blu-Ray sound issue

I recently purchased a Playstation 3. I picked up ice age the meltdown. i have a 5.1 audio receiver and its pretty old. it doesnt support dts. does this mean the only way for me to hear 5.1 is to buy a 5.1 dts receiver or should i still be getting english 5.1 digital and there is an issue with my console?

You should still be able to hear 5.1 in Dolby Digital if your receiver doesn't support DTS. Make sure your unit is connected via optical cable. If your receiver does not have this then you will have to get a new one as the PS3 does not support the older coax audio cable.

AFAIK, the title is only in DTS. if your receiver can not decode a DTS signal, then i don't think you can hear audio in english (spanish and french are in dolby)

To maximize your listening experience you should get another receiver with at least HDMI 1.1. I upgraded my TV and my receiver and boy was it worth it!

How would US$349 suit you?
Onkyo's 90W x 7 receiver with 2 HDMI inputs (v1.1) and one HDMI output with 1080p switching.

I have also purchased this same movie and have played it on a PS3. I have a Pioneer VSX-82TXS receiver connected via HDMI. The PS3 HDMI audio output is set to Bitstream (not Linear PCM). When it plays it says DTS+Dolby PIIx on the display. I know that DTS is 5.1, but Pro Logic IIx is not true 5.1. And since this title is DTS-HD MA shouldnt I be getting DTS-ES instead of DTS+PIIx?

I suggest you should PCM instead of bitstream. I experienced the similar situation like yours. Then I used LPCM only as PS3 can decode DTS signal internally and then send as LPCM to the receiver

That peculiar - it should read DTS+Neo:6

Yep, as mine (Onkyo 803) only supports PCM 5.1.

Depends on the movie. But generally. Yes.

The only reason that you should use bitstream is if you wanted to off-load the pure digital content to a decoder/receiver and then have it convert it to LPCM 5.1 (or 6.1 or 7.1 later). Although, I'm not certain that optical can support 6.1 and 7.1. Thoughts anyone?

And if you have an older receiver, you might not hear all the audio content (the PS3 BD-ROM menu warns you about this if you try and change it to bitstream).

I'm able to use both bitstream and PCM for the BD-ROM optical out.

By the way, you're missing out if you can't hear PCM 5.1. Seems like 25% jump in audio quality. Warm/Deep base and sprightly highs. You can change the audio on the fly while the movie is playing. That way you can change from Dolby 5.1 to PCM 5.1 and hear the difference.

Two ways to change it: via the on-screen Blu-ray menu or via the pop-up Playstation control menu (like the DVD for the PS2; scroll through English 1 to English 2 and so forth).

Ok so for my HDMI Audio settings for the PS3 BD player I want LPCM instead of bitstream? Or do I want my Receiver (Pioneer VSX-82TXS) doing the decoding?

since your receiver most likely doesn't have hdmi 1.3 (i don't know of any that do) you would want pcm output selected. the ps3 will decode the codec internally then and output it to your receiver.

Ok, this is how I understand it.

If your receiver can do better decoding than the PS3, use bitstream. If, not have the PS3 decode it (using PCM) and send it to your receiver "pre-packaged."

Also, note that you have two audio settings. HDMI audio output (LPCM/bitstream) and optical audio output (LPCM/bitstream). But from what I understand, optical out can only do PCM two channel. Not PCM 5.1 -- even though it displays as such (go figure).

So, if that is the case ( have not verified this w/my setup yet) that would mean that we're getting PCM quality via two channels whether LPCM or bistream is selected for the optical. But again, that's still your choice depending on what unit does the better decoding (later when you get a better HDMI/Optical receiver).

I don't have a HDMI capable receiver yet. So, I'm missing the capability of testing the HDMI audio functions.

Here is what doesnt make sense to me. If my receiver can decode DTS and DTS-ES, shouldnt it be able to decode DTS-HD MA 5.1 as standard DTS 5.1. It still doesn't make sense why my receiver defaults to DTS+Dolby PIIx when using bitstream, though I can change it to DTS+Neo:6.

Hi,
I am a little confused on the audio track for Underworld. There is uncompressed 5.1 and standard DD 5.1 track. I am using an older Lexicon DC-2 for my processing and no matter what setting I used, when switching the audio tracks my amp still showed up as Pro-Logic. It was only when I switched the settings on the PS3 to bitstream instead of LPCM that I got the DD 5.1 on my receiver. Now here is where I am a little lost. Is the PS3 sending the uncompressed 5.1 thru the optical when its set on LPCM? If not then what exactly is going thru the optical when its on that setting? Is it just sending standard Pro Logic? I know the Lexicon can decode 5.1 and I have read that the PS3 will also decode. If that was the case then shouldnt it have shown up as 5.1 even though it was set to LPCM since I am using optical? This is the first title that I have come across this problem with my audio and just wanted to clear things up.Thanks in advance.
