Default PS3 and onkyo 605 settings

I have a PS3 and an Onkyo 605 recevier. I have an optical cable for audio. I have a few questions: Should I set the audio output to linear PCM or Bitstream? Should Dolby Digital and DTS be selected? and on the rear speakers should they be hooked to back L R or just left and right. I have heard mixed opinions. I only have a 5.1 set of speakers. I had the rears hooked to back and the receiver set to Bitstream but I was hearing no rear sound on DVD's or blu rays. I switched to linear PCM and can hear the rears but they are still plugged into the back ports. Is this correct? I am confused, any help would be appreciated.

Audio and the PS3
sticky

For optical you'd want to bitstream. Your speakers should be connected to the left and Right surrounds. The 'rear surrounds' are for 7.1. Make sure you go through the audio options on the PS3 and select the correct settings.

and WELCOME!!!

any reason you aren't using HDMI? You can get them cheaply through monoprice.com or Amazon. That would allow you to take advantage of HD audio once the PS3 was set to Linear PCM

If you have a PS3 and a Onkyo 605 you need to hook it up with a HDMI cable and get rid of that fiber optic (for uncompressed sound)...

I'd love to use HDMI but my TV is only set up for Component video so it will have to wait until I upgrade. I will definitely being posting for good TV reviews when that day comes. Thanks again for the help to all who wrote in it sounds great now.

you can set the ps3 to send audio through the hdmi for your receiver then video through component. hd through component is pretty good although hdmi is still best. but at least youll get hd video and audio.

Can someone provide me help with my 605 setup? I have my ps3 setup audio output using the hdmi, unfortunately while movies show a 7.1 output in the ps3, the receiver only shows 5.1 output. What settings should I have in receiver to get 7.1? I'm sure more details are needed to solve this problem, but I'm so new to this that I don't even know where to start. Help!

+10 billion.....Indyjonesrelic, you should absolutely check this route out. It's one of the many beautiful things about the PS3, you can still get HD audio, even if you have to use component cables... Take it from everyone on the board, it's a big difference, and its worth it Buy an hdmi cable for $10-12 and listen to lossless audio in all its glory.

Hey Mike,
first make sure you are outputting as Linear PCM over HDMI. This means the PS3 is internally decoding the audio and sending out via HDMI. Once that is set up your receiver will only show 'Multi-channel' but you will have access to whatever is on the disc.
Note that only a few movies are taking advantage of 7.1 at the moment. Most of the available movies have been mixed in 5.1, so you may be hearing everything intended. There's a slight bug at the moment with 3 or 4 titles and 7.1 DTSHD-MA but that will be corrected in a firmware update.

Thanks for the info. I now have the setup you Right now I'm exploring my new setup and enjoying the great sound coming from my speakers. I did find it interesting that my receiver displayed 7.1 audio when I was in the PS3 main menu. once I started watching the movies, hairspray or pan's labyrinth, the display would change to 5.1.

multichannel 7.1, then when you start watching a movie with a 5.1 track, it switches to multichannel 5.1.

still sounds great.

Default HDMI for audio only

In reference to: (+10 billion.....Indyjonesrelic, you should absolutely check this route out. So If I use the HDMI cable just for audio I set the PS3 to output linear PCM through HDMI and set the receiver audio to receive Linear PCM through HDMI as well. I can leave the video settings for component and they will not be replaced by the HDMI setting?

correct.

HDMI for Audio
Component for Video

...you can connect and configure both to an Input button on the 605 receiver.

what TV do you have by the way? does it have a DVI connection?

I have an older Toshiba rear projection I believe it is model number TW5681 it is a 56" that only goes up to 1080i. I can't find the manual so I am not sure on the model number but that seems right. I don't think it has DVI.

no big deal. As long as you can input a 1080 signal over component you'll be all squared away. You would have to physically change the video settings to have issues. Let us know of any issues as you play with it, and we'll help out where we can.

i have the 705. it will display only multi channel since the ps3 is decoding. the receiver doesnt even "see" dts. the dts its displaying (if your ps3 is set to pcm) is probably one of the listening modes. on the remote hit direct or surround. on mine, its surr and it uses the audessey settings, if i use direct, audessey isnt used. but either case, all that is displayed on the receiver is multi channel pcm and audessey
