I have my Directv HR20 HDMI'd (monoprice) to my Onkyo 605, which is HDMI'd to my Pioneer TV. Also, I have the HR20 hooked up straight to the TV with Monster component (for when I don't want to have all of my audio equipment on). Switching back and forth between the two on a 1080i signal, I noticed that the HDMI setup was significantly brighter than the component. It was almost as if the component PQ was too dark and HDMI was too bright. The HDMI made the noise in the 1080i signal more apparent. I realize that I can adjust my brightness, but I have never noticed this difference before. Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. Even using the same source and destination components on the same settings, you're likely to have some differentation between output levels. It's best to optimize your TV settings for each input and source to account for the changes. The same holds true for using different audio cable connections as well.
