Default Anime Blu-ray News

A few news items we posted about today at AnimeOnDVD.com

FUNimation will be releasing the Robotech: Shadow Chronicles movie (done in HD originally) on 9/2 and will include more new extras on it.

Bandai Entertainment will release Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence on Blu-ray and DVD. The film was previously released by Dreamworks and never got a dub in the US, but was dubbed for UK release. A new dub is being commissioned that will have it done by the same folks who worked on the TV series. No date was given and this is the first Blu-ray release from Bandai Entertainment.

Robotech: The Shadow CHronicles & Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence....both are huge disappointments (especially Robotech:TSC). I hope they have more of library selection lined up.

GitS 2, yay!
I love being able to replace my DVDs. I have a feeling it will take 20 years (if ever) to be all Blu at this rate though...

I'll rent them both as I have never seen either, and arent generally the 'type' i like.

At any rate, the more Bluray news we get, the more hopeful I am they start pushing it hard.

Oh and this wasnt posted but Gurren Lagann is going to be coming out to Blu-Ray from Bandai in America and not ADV Films which made the dubbing but never released it when they were supposed to. But thats going to be awhile before that comes out which is probably next year when Bandai includes an English dub even though the dvds with no English dub are coming out this Fall to dvd in 3 dvds and just Japanese only with subtitles

I think ghost in the shell would have been better with dubs in this case, I preferred the American voices for ghost, loved the work on that movie.

Its painful to own both already on dvd, hmmm If I have some extra cash
when they come out ill see about upgrading them to blue.. makes me wish
I had not bought them when I did.

I thought Spielberg was doing GitS CGI? Maybe I read it wrong.

Ah well, I havent seen the original yet, so it has no emotional effect on me, whatever they decide to do with it.

Spielberg isn't directing, probably, just producing, so it could be a complete disaster. Look at Transformers (which I couldn't stand). Also, I dread the Americanized characters-- Motoko becomes Jane, Togusa becomes Tom, and the heavily tied into Japanese politics stuff becomes all about America. Yuck.

Note: These are not facts from a link somewhere, just an opinion, before anyone asks...

See, I am the opposite. If you are going to leave the Japanese names then the actors would all have to actually be Japanese. No blonde hair, no colored eyes, just Asian. Tom Cruise playing a guy named Kaji? That's dumb. And I'm pretty sure we can all agree that no all-Asian movie will ever sell in America as anything other than fly-by-wire kung fu.
No opinions on right/wrong in there, just saying.

I wouldn't count on that necessarily

Spielberg has been an anime fan since the 70s, if the rumors are true he has his own personal fansubs of all of Gundam, which he paid to have done professionally from the LD boxets (dunno if that's true)

While what he allowed to be done to Transformers was shameful, I doubt Shirow will permit the same to be done to his babies, and there's no toy company beating down his door with their own ideas this time
