I should probably know this but does the PS3 act as an upconversion player when you play DVD's? I just never saw that in the spec sheet. Thanks in advance for your answers.

there is supposed to be a firmware update coming out in march that will allow this. of course, that is just rumor until it happens

I don't know how "simple" the update would be, but there is no reason why the PS3 processing power can't be used to upconvert, it just needs the instructions to do it.
Single chips that perform specific tasks are cheaper to mass produce than general purposes chips that are able to do several things, and they often can be configured to be more effeceint for the single task they are designed to do. |

i remember that when computer DVD players first came out, the best way to watch movies was with a hardware based decoder which i had. eventually, software decoding became commonplace and now hardware decoding is difficult to find. using some form of logic here, i would think some software program can be written to do exactly this. also, i would assume the ps3 would have some dedicated scaler built in anyway. |

Again, I can't find the thread, but Penton-Man at AVS said there certainly was a scaler in the PS3. Why it hasn't been activated is unknown at this point. Honestly, I don't think I've watched one DVD since getting into Blu-ray. It's a nice feature but not one that has any value towards critical viewing for me.

Exactly. A lot of 360 games are not even 720p (tony hawk 8, call of duty 3, project gotham racing 3 and a lot more) run even less then 720p (in the 500's) and then use the internal scaler to go to 720p, so you're getting fake HD gaming. PS3 doesnt want programmers getting lazy and not using the hardware to its potential by doing half ass jobs, so they dont let them use the scaler to get away with duping the public.
