Default audio question

I have a ps3 hooked up hdmi to an onkyo 605. When i play a video or music off the ps3 hard drive it only plays in stereo- or a cd will too. I have 7.1 sound set up and works fine when I watch a bluray movie. why don't all the speakers work when I play music?

Why can't I use my receivers DSP?

When playing a CD or file off the hard drive, the PS3 is still setup to internally decode and send out the music as PCM. Most likely you are hearing the music in stereo (which incidentally is how it was originally recorded) and do not have access to the receivers Digital Signal Processing or Soundfields. If you would like to take advantage of these functions you need to uncheck the PCM options under

Settings > Sound Settings > Audio Output Settings > HDMI > Manual

Many new receivers have multiple assignable inputs for video and audio. It is important to make sure you go through your receiver's menu system, assign the connections to a corresponding field (CBL/Sat, DVD, Gaming etc...) in order to take advantage of HD codecs.

Linear PCM and Bitstream on the Fly

You can easily toggle between the two settings while the movie is in play. This allows you to switch back and forth without having to stop in the middle of the movie.

Press the Triangle button and go to A/V Settings

Not all. Music on SACD or DVD-A is usually multi-channel (5.1).
