Default Another idiotic question from a newbie...

Hello All!!!

Simple question....can I use my Blu-Ray player (Sony BDP-S300) to watch an Audio DVD (DVD-A)?

I have long wanted to give this a try...if it matters I am using a Harman Kardon AVR-335 and a Toslink cable to interface the Blu-Ray and receiver.

Additonally, has anyone tried this format and what do you think of it?

Thanks in advance!

Unlike the BDP-S1 (and Pioneer Elite's BDP-HD1) the BDP-S300 will play back CDs, either from its analog audio outputs or any of its digital audio outputs, including HDMI. But it will not play SACD, DVD-Audio, and some types of recordable DVDs (DVD-RWs and DVD-Rs in VR mode and DVD-RAMs). There is also the usual disclaimer that some recordable CDs and DVDs may not play on the BDP-S300, due to "the recording quality or physical condition of the disc, or the characteristics of the recording device and authoring software."
It looks like it won't play it. Checked sonystyle, and there's no mention of DVD-A playback on the specs for it there either.

My Pioneer/Elite BD-P94HD plays DVD-Audio just fine and in 5.1 Surround.

I am using a co-axial cable to transfer audio from my player to receiver.

Samsung BD-P1200 works as well for DVDA. Not sure about SACD.

Sony BD players will not play DVD-A discs. DVD-A is the competing audio profile to Sony's Super Audio CD format, so Sony doesn't support it.

You'll still be able to use the lossy portions of the DVD-As. Many of them contain a plain Dolby Digital or DTS audio track for compatibility with standard dvd players.
