Default Newbie question

first of all, hello everyone, im new to the forums, my name is Matt and im from Canada.

now, let me get to the point...
I bought a new Samsung HDTV and home theatre system last week, and i have a question.
here is the TV: http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/d...LN46A750R1FXZC

and here is the Home theatre system: http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/d...HT-AS720ST/XAC

and i have a BD player samsung BD-P1600: http://www.hdtvlounge.net/blu-ray/samsung-bdp1600/

now, here is my question:

I connected the BD player through HDMI (monster cable) to my HT amp (AMP= Home theatre thing, where you change the settings etc, sorry, im a newbie, WITH a bad english ), and the amp is also connected to my HDTV through HDMI cable (also monster cable)

the problems is, when im watching movies, it says the resolutions is 1080i. shoudnt it be 1080p? (the movie was The dark knight)

of so, how can i fix this?

thank you in advance for your help, and have a good day/night

IF THIS IS THE WRONG SECTION, I AM SORRY, BUT COULD A MOD KINDLY PUT THE TOPIC IN THE RIGHT SECTION? THANK YOU

Go to Wal-Mart or Costco. They both sell Philips HDMI cables for around $30. If not, order it from Monoprice.com if you can wait for the delivery, which shouldn't take long.

Am I missing something here? John are you just pulling MATT90's chain about buying more HDMI cables? MATT90 says he has HDMI cables so buying new ones won't change a thing from my understanding. If he had component cabling then the 1080i limitation would make sense, but not with HDMI. I respect your knowledge in this area John so I am now questioning what I have understood about the cabling issue.

The cables I was using only supported 1080i of maximum resolution (yes, they were HDMI), that was my problem. now im looking for a 1080p hdmi cable...

oh, thank you john, and wolverine for the suggestions. i'll take a look at walmart tomorrow

Don't buy new cables..... I've never seen an HDMI cable not capable of carrying a 1080p signal...... it's your settings..... START OVER.....

No need to pay for marketing and "High-Speed HDMI" cables or whatever you'll undoubtably end up buying......

Exactly!

If you have Cat2 (or even Cat1) cables, they are ALL capable of passing a 1080p24 signal with lossless audio (which runs ar 1.10 Gbps). If you happen to have Monster 2.23 Gbps cables that "claim" only 1080i/720p, that total BS. Don't believe the marketing, and DO NOT go out and spend big $$ on new cables. You want to order a $5 cable from Monoprice to test, fine, go right ahead. It will do the exact same thing as the $150 Monster cable.

are you guys sure? because on the HDMI box it only says: 720p/1080i

i'll try again and look on the BD player settings...

all this is so confusing :/ but thank you all for your help I really appreciate.

PS: sorry if i caused any sort of confusion, you see, my english is not very good. XD

EDIT: ok, i've changed the BD setting to 1080p. now the TV says it's running at 1080p (actually it only says 1080 without the "p"... but it should be 1080p...before it said 1080i...)

i cant tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p, but it should be all right now.

thank you all for your help..i was going to buy a new cable this saturday. you guys probably saved me at least 30$ XD it's a BAD thing to be a newbie in this kind of things...

thank you all again

Today's sets display a 1080i signal progressively, so feed a 1080p set a 1080i signal and it will be displayed in 1080p. If your set deinterlaces properly, you most like won't see a difference between the two input signals.

Yes, we are sure about the whole HDMI marketing crap that is designed to confuse the buyer and make them think they need to spend more $$ than need be. Read through the following post and look at the chart published by Monster. They "rate" their 2nd lowest cable as being only capable of handling 720p/1080i, yet based on the speed rating it can handle ALL 1080p24 can offer.

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=366

Glad it all worked out for you!

If you want even more technical test info on HDMI cables read this:

http://www.audioholics.com/education...le-bench-tests

And yes, all HDMI cables will do 1080p, no matter what the package says. That's how Monster Cable tricks you out of your money.
