Default Newbie question

Hey guys. Here's what I have. RCA 32 inch HDTV with a Sony PS3.
Here's my question/problem.
I have several movies, but here is an example.
I have Saw 4. When i watch it, it fills my entire screen PERFECTLY in perfect widescreen. When i watch many of my other Blu Rays, they show up in Letterbox format... i can't figure this out... I don't mind the bars on the top and bottom, but I don't think I should have them since I have an HD tv...
any help would be great. I'm new to this, so I don't know much about it.

A few titles do exactly that. They are shot in 1:85 aspect ratio which is very close to 16 X 9. So they eliminate the remainder of the black bars and up it to fill your set. We DO loose a tad bit of picture this way. Personally, I don't like an inch cut off of any movie.

Thanks, just saw the post on the black bars too... very informative...
As a bonus question, is it possible to know when you get a movie whether or not it was shot as Scope or the other way by reading the back of the Blu ray box?

sometimes yes but this website will tell you what aspect ratios just by going into which movie you want to check out in the movies section

1.85= no bars on HDTV
2.35= small bars
its on the box how its shot. i think 1.33 (standard) should have bars on the side

first of all welcome to Bluray.com community. about your subject, I have to agree with moonphase, that black bars have been and continue to be a normality for some of the releases. you could always check the aspect ratio when you purchase a movie.
