if your new to audio systems, i would say (please don't criticize on this) get a HTIB, home theater in a box. you can get them for under $500 and get them in 5.1 or even 7.1 if you want. after you have that for awhile you can upgrade to something better if you want. IMO i would start with a HTIB and then after awhile upgrade and build your own home theater after you listen to what you have and find out what you want to upgrade to.

Agreed. When my father-in-law wanted surround sound, the first thing we got him was an inexpensive HTIB. Same with my sister-in-law. The less of an audiophile you are, the less you need stand alone audio devices. Once you decide you do want to spend a little more money though, you will notice a difference with the more expensive equipment.

Go for a HDMI receiver. I am still not sure if you need an HDMI 1.3 connection to do DD True HD or DTS MA. The PS3 PCM ( pulse code modulation) all PS3's next gen audio so I think any HDMI receiver will do the trick as long as it's not audio pass through only.

I belive this will do the trick it's a Denon

I purchased this one new about a year ago when I was in your same position. I had no clue on Home Theater except for TV's. I picked this one up:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HTD-DW790...2441507&sr=8-1

It was cheap at the time $180 (even cheaper now $110) and was a good intro into home theater audio. I'd be willing to sell mine to you, I have the original box, packing materials, manuals, cables, etc.

I'm in the process or building my new 5.1 setup, buying the components piece by piece. If you go with a cheap HDMI receiver ($300), just a cheap center channel ($100), left and right ($200 for both) and a sub ($100), you are already at ~$600. Thats quite a bit to spend without really knowing the quality.

My recommendation is a cheap 5.1 HTIB setup or save your pennies and do lots of research for a decent 3.1 or 5.1 setup. Most on the forum will say to build your system piece by piece, but I believe this is advice for a person who #1 has the patience, and #2 has the time to do research on what components they really want. In the end we are all bound by our budget.

I definitely agree with the whole HtiB idea. It is what I did. What you can do is simply upgrade as you go along, swapping out one at a time. Budget away for a nice HD capable receiver and speakers in a while once you get an interest in audio.

if its not out of your price range I would go for the Panasonic Blu-Ray HTIB... as far as i can tell the player is spec for spec with the BD30 from panny, aside from being a 5 disc changer, and it is 7.1 ready if you want to buy the addons

http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-e...00000000005702

or the onkyo HT-SP908 7.1 system for the same price, no blu-ray player but you do have a lot more inputs and you can run your PS3 on it still

http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=...ss=Systems&p=i

both retail for the same price.
