Default My Sony Receiver!?!?!?

Hello all,

I have an older Sony ES1000 (about 5 years old) receiver, pre-HDMI 7.1 surround that I have hooked up to a PS3 via opticial cable. I have been very excited to see some of the new Lionsgate releases that feature the 7.1 surround soundtracks. I finally rented 3:10 to Yuma on Blu this weekend and guess what? It does not decode 7.1 uncompressed audio. Could someone please explain? I figured that since it is PCM I would be able to receive the audio. Is it the PS3? I thought years ago by purchasing a 7.1 receiver I would be ahead of the game. Was I incorrect or am I missing something here? Thanks for any help!!

Yes. An optical cable does not have the bandwidth to carry five or more channels of uncompressed audio.

It has the bandwidth. It's actually copyright protection that keeps it from being able to do 5.1 from optical. But same basic idea.

Let me cap this thread of by warning everyone not to take the bait on technology that is too new, like I did with this receiver. There is not a single movie in the 7.1 surround format that my receiver is capable of decoding. The only use seems to be for a fuller rear soundfield when in the 5.1 format. Nobody to blame but myself!!

7.1 really isn't all that necessary anyways.

Very true ... however ... the new Panny BD50 and Sony 550 coming out soon will onboard decode Dolby True HD and DTS-MA 7.1.

I have the Panny BD50 on preorder from visualapex.com for $599, $100 under the just announced list.

Don't blame yourself. Your receiver is 5 years old, and that can be an eternity in this game, especially when dealing with digital input formats. If the PS3 had multi-channel analog outputs, you'd be right in the game. Unfortunately, you'll have to upgrade to at least an HDMI 1.1 receiver with audio passthrough in order to experience lossless 7.1 audio. If you buy an HDMI receiver without built-in Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio decoders, since your PS3's doing all the decoding, you can find a good one rather inexpensively.

HDMI is a great interface, and it's quickly become the industry standard. It should last for years to come.

If I beat myself up over all the DVDs I bought since 1997, I'd be a human-hamburger

I'm repulsed -- and yet, strangely hungry at the same time.
