Question PS3 Question

When i turned on the ps3 it told me to formatt the hard drive. I clicked OK and it said that it will delete everything on the hard drive, so i decided to call the sony help bunch and they said to go ahead and do it. I clicked formatt and once again it said this may delete everything so, i clicked OK. Now it is say formatting...
DO NOT TURN OFF SYSTEM
and it has been saying that for 1 hour and 30 minutes and the formatt bar is still at 0%.
Has anybody else had this problem? Please tell me what to do.

Was this a new PS3, or did you already have stuff on it and were in process of installing new firmware upgrade?

Hmm, call Sony again. Is it 1% yet? If so, then it may take a while.

I can't remember how long it took exactly and I could be wrong about this (since I can't remember for sure) but when I recently installed a 250gig drive in mine, I think it only took a few seconds for the format to complete (kind of like the quick-format on a PC).

If you can safely get out of that process, I'd take the drive out and put it back in. Maybe just reseating it would help since it looks like it's having trouble communicating with the drive.

it takes seconds to format the hd for the ps3. when i swapped out my 40gb and put in a 120gb it was done in 5 seconds. I would call sony sounds like it is bricked. of course if you are the daring type you could power off the unit and reboot....proceed at your own risk though...personally i would stick with option 1 and call sony!

Your right. I put a 320 gig in mine and the formatting only took a few seconds.

if you haven't changed your hard drive then there is still an issue. i reformatted my old original 40gb hd once and again it only took a coupel of seconds. Either your ps 3 is bricked or your hard drive has failed. again if you can cancel the format (usually by pressing 0) go for it, if not you need to call sony right away

Could be that your HDD jumped off the deep end ...

As it's under waranty, I'd deal with the Sony people first.
But, and if willing to try, you could get a cheap 60Gb HDD or more and try it in place of the existing one (carreful, it's not the same size of HDD as the PCs, it's a Laptop type HDD. Check the sticky about switching the HArd Drive if you want to try that).

A HDD take seconds, minutes at max, to format. If you are beyond an hour, it just won't happen imho.

Unfortunately,

someone needs to check and verify that your PS3 is OK or not.
I can't say which part needs to be checked, but you definitely need an expert opinion.

Take it back to the store you bought it from.
And let them check it.

One of the easiest thing to do if you can (maybe not).
Put the PS3 hard disk into an external drive unit (SATA connector).
Connect it to a USB port on your PC or laptop.
Then do "LOW LEVEL" format - "format" option.
NOT a "quick format" option.
See if that works, if not then the HD has gone bad.

Sorry about your problem.

i would call back and ask to speak to a supervisor. explain that you have called several times and have not had any satisfactory responses and that after 2 hours it is still at 0%.

turn off the ps3 by holding the power button down on the front like normal. then when the power light turns red. flip the switch on the back to off. wait a couple of seconds then flip that switch back on and power up the ps3 as normal
