A question regarding HDMI output - Blu-ray Forum

Hi,
I just wanted to ask If I have a laptop with 720p(1280x800) resolution and want to watch a Blue-ray movie with 1080p(1920x1200)resolution by connecting the laptop via its HDMI cable to a tv capable of playing full HD(1080p),will I be able to watch the movie with its 1080p resolution?

Yes, disable the laptop monitor and use the tv as the monitor and make sure the resolution settings on the #2 monitor are 1920x1080@60hz (if the set is 60hz capable).

The laptop which I want to buy is dell xps 1330 with 1280x800 resolution.
I don't know whether its set is 60hz cabale or not.Can you please help me about this? I'll really appreciate it.

do you have to go laptop?? a tower would be cheaper but not to portable but you would be able to customize the system to what you wanted. I have built 38 pc's so far and have it down to less than 500.00. I understand about the benefits of a laptop tho.

If I understand you correctly, you want to buy a laptop with a BD drive and make it do double duty. That is, you want to meet your computing needs and your BD player needs in one box. While I certainly understand the economy of it, it may be a bit cumbersome to do this all the time. If you plan to watch many movies, you may want to budget for a standalone BD player down the road. Oh, a "set" in this context means a Television set.

First to your question. As long as your TV monitor is 1080p, you would be able to use it to view Blu-ray discs at that resolution. You will need to temporarily disable the internal display in order for everything to function properly, but that is easily done within either the Nvidia or Intel graphics control panel.

Out of curiosity, what drive are you using to play back Blu-ray discs? I assume you have purchased (or will be) an external USB2 Blu-ray drive, as the XPS 1330 doesn't offer a built-in BD drive (although many sites initially reported that it did) and the internal drive slot is the ultrathin 9.5mm type, meaning you can't add a typical aftermarket 12.5mm BD drive. If you were wanting a built-in drive, consider stepping the screen size up slightly. Dell, HP, and Lenovo all offer 14.1" models with built-in BD drives.

I wanted to either buy dell 1330 or dell 1530 because of its Blueray drive but i haven't find any 14'1 which offers blueray drive.
Can you please introduce some models to me or maybe give some useful links as I'm looking for a portable laptop with a drive cabable of recording blueray dvds as well.
Maybe I'm a little bit perfectionist.

You may have a problem with getting a 14.1" laptop that has a Blu-ray drive. Why do you want such a small screen?

I would be very careful using a laptop for Blu-ray viewing. I have a fully optioned Dell XPS M1710 and it really struggles playing many Blu-ray movies. Some are OK to watch, but most are really jerky and very noticeable on a large screen.

First of all I want it as portable as possible and also I want to use its HDMI for watching blueray movies on an HDTV.

My 17" Sony AR- series laptop doesn't struggle one bit with BDs. Although I did just notice that it doesn't like the Cars BD. Thats what you get for buying Dell!
