Default Region Free/PAL confusion

I live in the US and I am a little confused about buying "Region Free" Blus. I looked at some on Amazon UK and they say that they are Region Free but they are in PAL format. I know that PAL format is a different resolution than NTSC, but does it matter that it is in PAL or will it still play in my PS3. And if it does play what is the picture going to look like (IE...will there be bars or something that normally wouldn't be there if there was an NTSC version?)

Thanks and sorry if this has been asked before. I searched and couldn't find an answer.

Amazon still seems to use a DVD template for their Blu-ray listings. You can simply ignore what they are saying about PAL or Region 2 as far as Blu-ray is concerned.

You should use an independent site like
http://bluray.liesinc.net/
for info about region coding.

Bear in mind that any extras in standard def will not play though.

no worries, their site seems a little slow at the moment but they seem to be the place where most ppl import their spanish dvds/blus from.

Depends... a lot of SD material on former-PAL region BD's are actually 480. I've rarely seen the higher resolution 576.

Most tv's or nearly all tv's made at least 12 years ago should be able to handle both pal and NTSC for the SD material

The problem for me is a US PS3 only outputs SD NTSC, not SD PAL.

Most European TV's and DVD players play both.

As others have said, they'll work just fine. Just check the site they listed, although, I think this address is easier to remember: www.blurayregioncodes.com. It's the same site, just an alias that is a little easier to remember. As far as the extras, I have some imports where the extras aren't supposed to work but I haven't checked them to see if that's true or not. I just assumed it was. I didn't mind though, since I'm mostly just interested in the movie itself.

If you order from Amazon and already have an account setup in the US, it's really nice. Don't have to re-enter your info and even if you don't understand the language, if you're familiar with the ordering process/steps, it's pretty easy to complete. Some like the Japan site offer an english translation. If not, Babel Fish at altavista is handy for translating: http://babelfish.altavista.com/.

In the US, Xploited Cinema (www.xploitedcinema.com -- probably not work safe though so wait until you're home to check it out) has a lot of the imports although some are a little expensive. The service is great though and very fast.

So far, I've ordered from xploitedcinema.com, ww.amazon.co.uk, www.amazon.fr and www.amazon.de without any issues. You can even get the movies in 2 days (or overnight if you've ordered from xploited cinema) if you're willing to pay for the express shipping.

I was a little leery about the import process as well but some here convinced me to try it and I'm glad I did. Zyclone has also been a big help (answering my questions, concerns, etc.).

Ignore any information the various Amazons have listed about region coding for Blu-ray. Whatever database they are using is wrong all the time.
