Buy an HDMI cable, and the Bluetooth remote.
All you need is an HDMI capable HDTV. I highly recommend an HDMI compatible AV Receiver as well. With all this all you need to do is hook the HDMI from the PS3 to the receiver, and then from the receiver to the TV. THis will give you the best surround sound, and the best image. Without the receiver, hook it straight to the TV for the best image. HDMI cable is not included in the PS3. |

Also, the $399 version is a 40GB model that lacks PS2 and SACD playback, soon to be re-released is the 80GB model ($499 i think but not sure) that will have PS2 and SACD playback as well as twice the hard disk space.
If you wait for Metal Gear Solid 4 to come out, you can get that bundled with it. But if you are not into games, get the 40 GB model, it is the best for movies! |

when you boot it up there is a menu system (xmb) and just set the audio, video, bd/dvd settings for what your using. thats it. you may also need to hook it up via ethernet to update the firmware, depending on what version it is out of the box. there is a way to do it via pc and thumb drive too but ive never done it that way.

In the BD menu set ps3 to linear PCM, this is what it has to be on when waching blu-ray movies. audio settings(are you getting surround sound?) check off PCM 5.1 44 and 48khz, or 7.1 if your getting that.

i would say that the settings depend on what your using for sound. you may or may not be using a receiver with hdmi capabilities and using optical. the settings are different. if you tell us what you have exactly then you can get pretty much an exact settings checklist.

My 42" 720P/1080i Samsung Plasma TV has HDMI connections
I also have 5.1 surround sound with a Sony amp, that isn't HDMI.... It does have 1 digital optical and 1 digital composite connection, 1 of which I need for my non- HDMI HD cable box sound . My cable box is connected with a DVI to HDMI adapter, then HDMI into my TV. Hope all this makes sense.....as I can afford new components, THEY WILL ALL BE HDMI ! lol |

Super easy to set up I would drop a extra hundred on the 80 gig version though The 40 is great but I get 80 gig envy all the time now.40 gig doesnt play super audio cds, ps2 games has 2 less usb ports no sd card reader no memory card slots. If you just use it strictly for bluray get the 40 I guess though.

The PS3 "out of the box" setup is absolutely incredibly simple. It's when you start to get into singing up for PSN that it can get a bit tiresome. The internet itself is easy, but the PSN requires a lot of character inputing. And if you aren't set up with a keyboard, the onscreen keyboard display takes a lot of time to enter information into the system. Even then, the PSN access is worth it.

But for me, I have a hard time remembering what button does what on the game controller...at least the Bluetooth remote is labeled. sure people can learn using the game controller...but the feel of a standard dvd remote is so much more worth it I think. ![]() |

The only real complaint I can understand from people about the PS3 controller is the recharge factor on it... to which I always say, just take a couple of seconds to press the PS button and turn it off once you have started the movie and/or adjusted your playback settings. It is really simple and effective, but some people just ***** and moan insessently about the PS3 controller as a remote. |
