Hmm, the top set of pics have too much color and way too much light. Why are they even bothering with the flashlights in the top pics, I could read a book with that much light. I didn't see it at the theater though so is there really supposed to be a spot-light in that shot?
While I think the top one has too much color and too much light, the bottom one seems pretty good color-wise but seems off lighting-wise. The light from their flashlights seems too muted and if the front 3 are really supposed to have laser sightings, that seems too muted as well. But, it's also not exactly the same scene or frame (they're aiming at different locations and the bottom pic has a huge block where a predator statue resides in the top pic) so it's harder to compare the lighting from the lasers and flashlights with it being different. The top outside temple shot looks great but again seems more like something out of a video game. I think the bottom temple shot looks old and dingy while the top one looks newer with the aliens looking a little more like shiny plastic. But, the aliens in the bottom one kind of look like rubber. I'm glad the things look more realistic in motion. Basically, I think I can summarize my thoughts on it like this. The top shots look kind of like a video game where the specular has been cranked up while the light in the bottom pics seems a little too muted. I think all 3 of the top shots are sharper than the bottom pics though. The bottom ones all have a slightly soft/blurry look and the tops ones are possibly more detailed. I say possibly b/c I haven't been able to convince myself of that. I can't tell if it's more detailed because there's more light, making it easier to see the details or if some other difference is making the top one look more detailed and sharp. I love comparing screenshots so thanks for the links. Sorry about the long post though. I wish I had the ability to capture them myself but maybe it's best that I don't. I'd probably never get through the movies. With PC gaming, that was already becoming a problem. I was spending a lot more time taking screenshot than actually playing the game. |

The film have been DIGITALLY DARKNENED as DIRECTORS REQUEST.. WATCH THE MAKING OF. There's one place about the editing and one of the director said that Digital Darkening was used so that SFX didn't appear obvious and to let people use their 'IMagination more'
While i'am not for it. This technique has been also used in Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later.. but at the right place.. not on the WHOLE FU&*** movie |

You know, this thread is just like one of those good damn board meetings of execs all fans seems so much to hate. There's a filmmaker at the helm, and everyone dissects his decisions and want to put their 2c in, regardless of what his vision his. There's a reason a director is hired to do a movie. Once you done it, you should help him make his vision better, not destroy his vision until it makes no sense and look like a TV movie.
Also, a filmmaker is entitled to his decisions, even if they are bad. If anyone think they are bad, they shouldn't have hired him in the first place. Quite frankly, there are worse things than the AVP BR transfert and the director's stylistic choice out there, for starter, the unwatchable piece of complete crap that is AVPR, which in a better world would prevent the director's to approach Hollywood from a thousand miles ever again. |

Here's the problem and why these are invalid comparisons
While a Trailer/Blu comparison can be handy for spotting DNR (cough cough Golden Compass), It's completely obvious that you're comparing trailer shots with the final color grade. They're radically different even though they're the same shot. The filmmakers shot everything for a good exposure, and then dialed down everything but their subjects for AVP-R. I have no idea what happened with the original shot since I can't remember if there was lightning of something The answer is: No competant filmmaker has yet been hired to do an AVP movie ![]() |
