Default Onkyo 506 question

Does anyone have any experiance with the Onkyo 506 ? looking for a decent second receiver for upstairs. The price is good at Amazon at about $200 and says to have 1080p pass thru for video. I don't and won't have 7.1 upstairs so will be sticking with 5.1. I know with the unit I will still have to use optical for my PS3's and DirecTv boxes, which again, doesnt bother me. Just wondering if anyone has seen/used one. Thanks !

My dad has it, and it's not bad of a receiver...does it's job. Of course, you don't get all the nice options that the 805, 705 or even the 605 have. Also, i hope you understand that with an optical cable you can't get TrueHD or DTS-MA...if you don't care about it...then go for it. Can't go wrong with $200.

Having 3 HDMI inputs is about the only thing this receiver has going for it...at least for the sake of Blu-ray.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the same would be true for the 605, correct ? I've been told it won't handle audio thru HDMI, so I would still be using optical. I am by the way replacing an 8 year old Sony receiver with only 1 optical and coax for digital. So pretty much ANYTHING would be an improvement

the 605 will do what you want and more. the silver one is cheaper right now than the black and isnt that much more than the one your looking at.

if your going to upgrade, then at least do it so you can enjoy lossless with blus.

I guess I was mistaken, I thought I read somewhere that the 605 will not convert audio and people were still having to use optical for their PS3's. Since I can do everything thru 1 cable with the 605, it sounds like the way to go

the ps3 will "convert" the audio by decoding and sending it lpcm. but the bigger picture is if you ever plan to upgrade a player, you can get one that bitstreams and let the 605 decode the audio.
