Default 1080p or not

Hi I have a question which I have been unable to find the answer to:
When watching a film on Blu-ray in 1080p(on a 1080p screen) and it is presented in 'Letter box' format is the image truly 1080P?
To explain:I know it says 1080p on the disc box ,but if the whole screen has a native reolution of 1080x1920,then does the smaller image seen in most films not therefore have a lower resolution?

i.e it is 1920 pixels X whatever has been cropped off ?

Or can someone enlighten me and perhaps others on this?

There is still the same amount of pixels per inch that make what picture is there.

If the movie is letterboxed (say it's 2.40 or 1.85) the bars are a part of the encoded video file. Thus the resolution is always 1920X1080.

At least that is my understanding on it.

Default 1080p or not

Hi -thanks for the super-fast replies.

My understanding(and I may well be way wrong) is that the black bars are part of the image encoded on the disc-so are taking up some of the movies' potential horizontal resolution i.e the whole picture -bars included is in 1920X 1080.
