I have a small annoyance with my PS3 that I hope can be fixed, please help...
While watching BDs and DVDs with particulary dark scenes (AVP-R, for example) the screen tends to go artificially dark in dark scenes and then noticably brighten when even minimal amounts of brightness appear in the scene. It seems like there is a light threshold that determines the use of an artificial light/dark filter. I hope this clearly describes the problem - it is particularly distracting when watching movies with frequent amounts of dark scenery. Has anyone experienced this issue? If so, is there a setting that can be toggled to fix the problem? My PS3 is connected via HDMI to an ONKY705 to my 52XBR4. THANKS! |

I don't really know much about it but that sounds like it could be an issue with the dynamic contrast. Isn't that supposed to vary the TV settings on the fly based on the scene? I don't know if you get control over that or not but if so, I'd play around with that option.
On the PS3, maybe these options are applicable: You may want to play with this setting also: RGB Full Range (HDMI) I tried that option on mine and it essentially just made everything darker. I could adjust the brightness and get back to what I had before enabling it (so I'm not sure what the deal is with that option). http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...fullrange.html and maybe the Super-White option. http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...uperwhite.html I just guessing though. Hopefully someone with that particular TV will chime in. Since it varies based on the scene, I'd start by looking at the dynamic contrast on the TV (if it has an option for that). I think the PS3 options should be consistent and not vary by scene but I could be wrong about that as well. As I stated already, I'm guessing. ![]() Last edited by owa; 05-20-2008 at 01:46 AM. |

have you calibrated the TV yet?
...I bet its one of those "factory settings" that need to be turned off. |

It appears like a TV problem rather than a PS3 issue. Don't you have this problem for other video sources.

What do you have the RGB setting set to? Full or Limited? If its set to Full and your TV doesn't support it then it will be insanely dark. Trust me on this as I had the same issue.
Display Settings-- RGB Full Range ( HDMI) Limited or Full? Try both and see what affect it has. Last edited by Marine Mike; 05-20-2008 at 12:31 PM. |

Someone at HDD seemed confident that turning on "game mode" on the XBR4 would eliminate the auto-dim problem. I haven't tried this as I am at work.
In response to other suggestions - toggling "Full" and "Limited" does not fix the issue. |
