What do you have the RGB setting set to? Full or Limited? If its set to Full and your TV doesn't support it then it will be insanely dark. Trust me on this as I had the same issue.

Display Settings--

RGB Full Range ( HDMI) Limited or Full? Try both and see what affect it has.
