Default Lossless question...

I'm thinking about getting a new receiver. We usually don't get to watch movies until our 2 year old goes to bed and we have an old house where loud sounds go EVERYWHERE. My question is: Would I be able to tell much a difference in the sound quality upgrade if we have to watch movies at a lower volume. I personally can't tell the difference between mp3s that are ripped at a 360 bit rate and CDs at the volume we would have to play our movies. I do have a keen ear and can usually tell the difference when we get a chance to play them louder. Thanks ahead of time for any help.

In my opinion, yes, you should not have to play movies or music and foundation-shaking volumes to appreciate a sound upgrade. The differences may be subtle, but over time even subtle upgrades in sound can increase the smile factor quite a bit.

I personally find the most benefit at loud volumes, mostly because the louder volumes of DVD quality sound often tend to make it sound harsh. You can definitely hear the difference even at lower volumes, but it's much more noticeable at higher volume.

If you listen at lower volumes, you are at the mercy of the ambient noise of the room. The lower you can keep that ambient noise, the more you will tell the difference in sound. Keep in mind, the bass will sound weaker than any other frequency at lower volumes. The midrange will be the most prominent.
