Default Blu-ray on Linux?

I'm reading a lot online (and even an old post on the forums) about playback of blu-ray movies being "illegal" using Open-Source (Linux) software. Is this true? It doesn't seem to make sense since Dell sells systems with Ubuntu and blu-ray stock, and IBM is also a player who has considerable interest in the open source community. Plus...why shut out business, small as though it may be? Does anyone know the answer?
