Default How did you guys....

How did you guys get away with purchasing www.blu-ray.com if you are in no way associated with the Blu-ray Disc Association?

I'm guessing a domain name capture before such a group existed.

no, Blu-ray was announced in February 2002, same date this website was registered.

I can't imagine you would win a court case against 9 of the largest CE's in the world. Unless there was an agreement. Or this site was built by the BDA. But why does it say this site is in no way associated with the BDA?

because it isn't. When you purchase a domain name I am under the impression its yours until it either expires or its sold.
Prime example: Years ago the Miller family purchased the site name www.miller.com for their family photos etc...

Miller Brewing wanted that name but was already taken. I believe they tried to sue the family over it and lost. Its been 7-8 years since I heard about this so I cant remember all the details exactly but it was along that realm.

Anyways, Why does it matter? Premiere site here, hosting the most accurate and up to date information thanks for the blu-ray.com team
Just be glad they run it and not corporate America as for one, this forum would have never existed, It would be a news only type site.

You can probably get away with winning a case if you had a legitimate claim to the name, like your last name, similar to nissan.com. however, "blu-ray" is not a common name...and coincidentally www.blu-ray.com appeared in the same month the BDA announced the Blu-ray project to the public, February of 2002. I'm curious because I was always under the impression this was purely a fan driven site, supported by the fan base through amazon.com click-through purchases (as described in the sticky post in this forum), etc.

I don't see how the BDA would allow blu-ray.com to operate independently, unless they created and are funding blu-ray.com

The first search result from let's say google.com is this website. Say this website was purely fan drive, what if this website went down? Wouldn't the BDA be concerned about this?

Yeah i checked on the wayback machine at this website, crazy.

I'm curious too, not that it matters but I've always been told you could get sued over something like this... I just figured it did so much good for blu-ray and the promotion of the format that blu-ray itself had no quams about it.

But when Blu-ray becomes the sole format this could change...

Although I would assume tons of industry folks have relations to this site so its a win -win situation.

I dont understand why you are that worried about it? The site is providing good information and has a loyal fan base where the BDA can look for suggestions.
I am sure they have already acted on the sticky situation with the security seals. Free bottles of goof off for everyone!!!

Exclamation waiting now.

i own 4 domain names containing, bluray(no dash).i had intended to use them to promote certain blu-ray films. over all, it would help sell blu-ray. i'm waiting for some good legal advice.
