Default 5.1 to 7.1, weird speaker placement idea :)

Hello All,

I am planning to upgrade my receiver from a 5.1 to a 7.1. Right now, my rear speakers are flush against the wall, as far back as they can go in my living room.

I was thinking that maybe it might enhance the sound to get two smaller speakers, and place them ontop of my other surrounds. That way I have 7.1, although the speaker placement isn't the most ideal.

I have attached a few pics of my rear speakers (Infinity primus 150s)

I've been researching this topic lately and i don't think putting surrounds on top of your existing surrounds will do anything buy give you more volume and muddy your soundfield. If you have room maybe you could move your couch up a couple feet and mount your new side surrounds to the wall or ceiling at about 190 degree angle from your listening position (slightly behind).
I guarantee someone on here is gonna tell you to paint or hide those speaker wires and i guess that anal retentive person would be me.

Bad idea, would yield very muddy sound. If you feel you need 7.1, pull the couch away from the wall a couple of feet and put a set of stand mount speakers even with the couch and call them your surround speakers and your current speakers the rear speakers and move them in as far as you can. I would also say that your room, like mine, appears a little small for 7.1.

well is that a window in the back or a slider? if window you could get some small surrounds and have on ledge of window, but like suggested I would move the couch up a foot or 2.

5.1 is best given your space limitations.

Ranger-R: it is a window.

Thanks for all the replies, sounds like I should leave my setup as is

if you really want you can try it put the rear back speaker on the ceiling facing down and move your side surround about a foot forward since your couch is all the way to the wall make sure you adjust the speaker level on the back surround - i had the same situation before and it kinda worked.

Bad ideal - do not put more surround speakers on top of your present ones - you will ruin the rear sound stage - you will have incorrect depth and a weird rear image. Stay with 5.1

I wouldn't point them straight down, I would angle them out abit. Just point them at the listening area.

I have very little space myself, I live in an medium size Apt. If you look at the pics I have attached really close, You will see where I was lazy and didn't remove the old 5.1 speaker mounts. One side was a door way, so I had to mount them up high. Small space but still wanted full surround.

How come my pics never auto show? They are links?
