Default PS3 outsells 360 in Australia

Quote:
For Quarter one of 2008, that is. It's a small victory for our sleek black box; however, it surely is an interesting victory considering that the PS3 is a very pricey machine down under. According to Sony managing director Michael Ephraim who spoke with PALGN, the PS3 outsold the 360 by 45% in Q1 2008. Ephraim believes that, "it's a matter of time before [the PS3] surpass the install base [of the Xbox 360 in Australia]."

It looks like this far away PAL continent is starting to follow the footsteps of their European friends. Could Australia become the next Sony stronghold? Ephraim thinks so, "[Microsoft] were very weak in Continental Europe, so they have done fairly well here, but with the rate we're going we will definitely surpass the install base, we're just guessing somewhere around the end of the year, if not sooner if the trend keeps going the way it is."
does anyone know whats the status OFFICIALLY in USA?

The US is really the only very difficult region the PS3 has against the 360. Its a 2.4:1 ratio of 360s to PS3s in the US. Japan has PS3 ahead by a mile, europe will soon follow by the end of the year or so, but in america, the 360 is still very popular, and even if it loses steam, it will take millions upon millions of systems sold to overpass the 360. Years away from happening.

The PS3 has, at least Sony claims it has, outsold the 360 in Europe.

Why do people in the US still believe the PS3 is more expensive than the 360?

That's excellent news. I knew that one day the PS3 would outsell the XBOX360 here.

The USA plays a big part of the overall picture, but if the global figures for PS3 shoot up it will more than make up for the deficit in the USA. 360 is history as its just a games machine with a pretty online interface.

If 360 was able to produce more varied games and actually advertise them instead of just releasing sports and shooters all the time i'm sure it would sell much better.

Seriously, why does this seem to be such a "shocking" news to some people? The 360 has been out for such a long time, and you just know sooner or later sales will slow down; while the PS3's picks up. The real shocking news should have be if the PS3 don't sell as well as they are now.

I disagree, in order t get the same'ish' functions from a 360 you need to buy:
360elite - it has HDMI
wifi adaptor
continuos xbox live subscription
HD DUD drive - i think this has now been deleted over here.

in UK that totals around £400.
I'm guessing the same could be said for the US price wise

The 360 is $350, and the PS3 is $400 - period. Sure you can purchase extra stuff for it, but you don't have to. I have a 'stock' 360, and I have been very happy with it.

You could argue that you get more for your money with the PS3 (and I would agree), but saying it is cheaper than a 360 is a tough sell.

I am so ready for June 12th to get my PS3. My 360 elite just gave me the red ring of death last night!

The 40 Gig is the best selling PS3 brand.

Therefore, the majority of people buying the consoles spend MORE on the 360 than they do on the PS3.

Sure, you CAN buy a 360 cheaper. Most people don't.

Maybe I should rephrase: Why do people scream that the PS3 is more expensive then go buy a 360 Elite?

I still think that the Core and Arcade systems aren't real 360s. :P

Exactly, the average person buys a 360 to play the games. Most people as in "Average Joe" doesnt care about hdmi/wifi/BD. They want to play the games period. Yes you can do more with the ps3, but it comes down to the game market, which is what it is designed to play.

First, are there still people who complain about the PS3 price? Originally when it was $600 I know a lot of people were not happy about the price. But now that it is $400, I am not aware that price is an issue.

And the 490GB is the best selling model because it is the only PS3 model (which sucks - I wanted to pick up another 80, but had to settle for the 40 )

The 360 is indeed cheaper than the PS3, but it has also been out longer - but I don't see someone picking the 360 just to save $50 if they really want a PS3.

The 40 Gig was the best selling model even when the 80 gig was still easy to find.

There sure are. It's easy to find threads on pretty much any message board talking about video games to find threads about how the PS3 *needs* a price cut.

What prompted my post is a friend of mine just went out and bought a 360 Arcade. Ok, fine. Then he promptly bought a 120 Gig Hard drive and Xbox Live Gold for a year. Then he started talking about how he bought a "cheaper system".

Why is it that the majority of people who buy the "cheaper 360" end up with a higher entry cost?

At least Microsoft isn't as bad as Nintendo, who sell you a Wii for 250$ but by the time you are controller'd out and all set up you've spent like 600$ (for those who are hardcore gamers). To be fair this isn't as big of a problem anymore, now that most games will use any controller.

He's talking about the current sales run rate not the install base. Lately the PS3 is outselling the 360 even in the U.S.

Neither has an install base large enough to back your argument. There's no limit being approached that suggests the 360 had to slow down at this point. The PS2 certainly hadn't at the same point in its evolution.

Your logic is flawed. Also the PS3 is selling at a better rate than the 360 did at the point after launch.

Actually it seems that you agree that most people buy the 360 Elite versus the 40GB PS3, which means the PS3 is normally "indeed" cheaper. People could buy a cheaper 360 but normally they don't.

Seeing how the PS3 is currently outselling the 360 in all markets including the U.S. it seems the "average Joe" cares about something other than what you think he cares about.
