Default playing Blu-ray on a dvd player

I'm not really sure if this was asked already or not, but here it goes. Is Blu-Ray compatible with most dvd players? In other words,Can I play a Blu-Ray in my dvd player or would I need some special thing to play it?

Oh and do I need a special drive to burn them?

You can only play blu-ray discs on blu-ray players. You can, however, play DVDs on blu-ray players.

Blu-ray Discs need a machine designed to play Blu-ray Discs.
Different laser, finer focus of the laser, etc.

Many here prefer the PS3 game console(plays Blu-ray Discs fine).
Some here prefer a STB for the Home Theater/HDTV.
Others, like myself, prefer a computer drive.

EDIT: As nhaase stated, DVDs can be played in Blu-ray players.

Hope this helps!

It's not quite like VSH to DVD.... a BD disc is looks the the exact same as a DVD...they are the same size...shape and thinkness. It is an easy misunderstanding for people to think that BDs migth be able to play in a DVD player and just show standerd DEF.

How about this instead: The only dumb question is a question un-asked.
OR: There are no stupid questions- only stupid answers.

Everybody has to start somewhere, and shouldn't be afraid to ask forum members for help. Even you were a newbie once, right?

Be nice!

Thanks fo all the help everyone, well most everyone. I wanted to make sure if I needed something else to play them or not. Other wise I would have gone for a couple more dozen dvd's. Again, thanks for all the help most everyone.

And maybe, stop callining BDs "Blu ray dvd" (as some retailers do), will help end the confusion...

You know, i think it was the original XBoX games, that if you stuck in the PC DVD drive - they had a little XBOX animation that played and said "please put in XBox" or something.

I wondered if BD had a DVD readable layer...anyone tried it?
