Default spoiled by blu--movie theater

I went and saw a movie for the first time in ages, probably 4-5 months. I can't believe how ugly the picture is on the big screen comparing it to blu. I am so spoiled now that it was actually painful watching the flick.

Digital Theater is great tought. I hope cinema just invest in changing their material even if they cost 1M each....

When i saw Indy 4, it was full of mark, cigar burns and black lines, that was a 2nd running print lOL!

Yes, I much prefer watching movies in my home theater. I don't live close to any "digital" theaters, so the picture quality is not great when going out. One of the things I notice the most is the "flicker". The lighting of the image on the screen strobes ever so slightly, but it drives me crazy. There is usually a lot of scratch marks and dirt on the image as well. The sound is not nearly as good as in my home theater. The atmosphere is bad.

Now, whenever I go out to a movie (which is rare -- maybe 2-4 times per year), all the way through the movie I think about how much better it would look and sound on Blu-ray at home.

I went to see Prince Caspian and the picture was painful to watch. It looked like upscaled VHS. When I go see Indiana it'll probably be the last time I go to a movie theater for a while.

I have to admit, large screen size despite, I would never choose a theater over a BluRay at home now. I don't even have an amazing system like most of our posters, just a nice ~37" and a dated 5.1 system (pre-HDMI), but it looks so much better. You add that into the mix alongside the human problems of a movie theater... it's an easy choice. If it wasn't for the lag time b/w release and retail I think movie theaters would be in serious trouble.

My last movie was Vantage Point and even that was painful. Fuzzy picture, smelly theater, filthy seats. Oh Blu what hast thou done!

I agree....Caspian looke like crap when i saw it. My theatre now has one digital projector, so i've gotta check it out. My question is, for those of you have seen a movie on a digital projector: how does it compare to a standard projector? How does it compare to blu-ray?

My local Rave theater has a couple DLP screens and they look really good. I'd say the quality is somewhere in between old school projectors and Bluray, but i'm sure once i get a 60" plasma my theater going days will slow down considerably. If you still wanna go to the movies occasionally i'd suggest finding the closest DLP theater to you. It'd be worth it to me to drive an extra 30-45 minutes to get to one.

Caspian on a DLP screen looked amazing! BUT the screen it was on was TERRIBLE!

For some odd reason, I still like the movie going experiance. But I do agree it is nothing compared to Blu. I useally think, "this does not look as good as blu" or "this will look amazing when it comes out on blu" when the movie starts.

Strange, I looked it up and the theater I went to for Prince Caspian has DLP Cinema! I guess they used all their DLP projectors for Indy.

I went and saw Indy 4 the other day, the first time I had been to the theater since Christmas, and not only was I dissapointed about the movie, but the PQ was horrible. I pretty much just rely on the 65in DLP at home, much better PQ, AQ, and ambience than going to the theaters these day. Plus the amount of money I would spend on tickets, popcorn, soda, I could just buy myself a new blu-ray movie anyway...

Thumbs up I know !

Makes me want to SAVE my money. Eat Science Diet for 6 months, and upgrade my system. Or; maybe Top Raman Noodles? For 18 months, with the money saved, an upgrade is on the way ! AMC just raised their prices this weekend. Is it really worth it when THIS is comming out in JUNE

link : http://us.marantz.com/Products/2290.asp

Makes the idea of eating Top Raman a bit more apealing !

I can't tolerate other human beings at the best of times, so going to the cinema for me, is like skydiving for people with vertigo. Always some little bast*rd that either leaves their phone on or tries talking to their mates. People that buy ridiculous snacks bug the crap out of me as well, especially disgusting cheese and nacos. Seriously people, you won't starve by not eating for 2 hours. Yes, it's safe to assume that I prefer my home theater.

Saw Caspian, Iron Man and Indy and at least got 2 good movies out of it.. And I noticed myself that I do enjoy watching at home much more than in the theater. Added to the fact that with my wife and three kids, a movie in the theater is well over the $100 mark after you add in $5 cups of soda flavored ice, packing matieral popcorn and quarter full boxes of candy (which of course the kids HAVE to have) Then there are the people sitting behind you that just can't seem to realize that it is in fact your head they keep kicking, at least one person within ear shot asking every 10 minutes "is he going to die ?" and of course my favorite, the three members of the IBTC sitting in front of you texting and calling God-knows-who every 2 minutes, you just have to wonder how much longer movie theaters actually have left in them, before everyone stays home, saves money and enjoys the movie even more.

Seriously, though, I'm lucky enough to live in an area where almost every movie theater has DLP—if not straight up IMAX. It's still better to watch at home, though, since the PQ-to-screen size ratio is comparable, if not better, and you don't have to deal with people at home.

My first experience of a DLP screen was while traveling during the Christmas holiday. In Maryville, TN we saw No Country For Old Men and I was blown away by how well I could see the screen. At the end of January, we went Blu. OMG!
How we love our Blu! Went to see Iron Man at the local cinema and was so disappointed in the PQ and AQ. (The movie itself ROCKS!) The hubby and I both kept saying during the film that we couldn't wait to see this on Blu. For our area, the closest DLP is over an hour drive away. Guess we'll be waiting for most movies on Blu, but we may just make the drive for Hulk and no doubt we'll be driving for Dark Knight.

For those of you in the USA curious on how to find a DLP screen, try this link:

There is also a drop down for Canada, plus world.....

Now, even less so.
