Default which has better PQ, movie theater or Blu-ray

Which has better PQ, the movie theater or blu-ray?

I went to the theater this weekend, and was disappointed by the PQ, the movie was enjoyable, "Smart People", but blurry. Maybe was probably out of focus.

Got me thinking, do blu-ray releases look better than the movie in the theater? Does it depend on whether its 1.85:1 vs 2.35:1?

What a ridiculous question. I'm only joking but for real, the theater can't even compare to BD.

laughing. I haven't been to the theater enough, since getting spoiled by HDTV/blu-ray to know, but lately I'm not impressed by the 35mm theatrical release.
In theory, a theatrical 2.35:1 print could be better than blu-ray, since the 2x vertical means more negative area, and since blu-ray has only 817 lines vertical for 2.35:1. I'm curious to see what opinions others have.

I don't think I'll ever get tired of going to the theater...there's just always been something about the experience that makes me happy and gives me the warm fuzzies inside.

Movies would look better at the theatres if they were projected properly, and the film does get worn out after being projected several times.

yeah i remember when movies in theatres would burn a hole in the film
plus with blu-ray no idiots talking or cell phones going off but i have seen my share of bad blu-rays displayed in stores

my sentiments exactly. If I go, it will be nearing the end of the run of the movie. Less chance of phones ringing, people talking, kicking chairs...

my favorite time to see a movie is the day it comes out, but in the afternoon when everyone else is at work .

being a student has its MANY benefits.

also, I'll never tire of midnight movies, when it's the right movie. can't wait for Dark Knight.

here ya on that...only problem is, the town I live in doesn't play matinée movies during the week, maybe they do in the summer, can't remember, but right now they don't....otherwise I'd like to skip work and see dark night

that's a shame. I'm near several theatres so between them I can almost always find what I want and when I want.

I only enjoy the movie theaters when there's only a handful of people. But with technology, movie theaters are simply losing purpose. Just like the arcades I miss (and I don't mean the Dave & Buster's style).

Once console technology caught up with the arcades, the first blow had been dealt. Add on deeper gameplay and online access, and the arcades had nothing left to offer.

With HDTVs and surround setups growing in popularity, it was only a matter of time before theaters would start to go belly up. While it's my understanding the films have higher resolution, I'm able to see more detail (for various reasons) from Blu-ray in my home.

Plus, within the last six years, the time from box office to home has become shorter and shorter. I swear there have been movies I had planned on going to see, only to get side-tracked, get time to go, then BAM...see a commerical it's come out on DVD in two weeks.

In terms of technology, Blu cannot match resolution of film, not close really, try blowing a Blu up on a theater size screen. Also bear in mind that if the theaters closed where would our Blu's come from, straight to video quality is not so good. Box office receipts still run at record levels every year so they are not going anywhere.

Film should be better. I read Super-35 with low speed film is suppossed to be 4k or slightly more equivalent. but most of that advantage is lost on the way to making copies of copies in the process of getting to the theatrical print.
Then it seems you are at the mercy of focus at the theater. So, a lot of the other people responding seem to agree that blu-ray is way better than going to the theater.

I'm really careful about WHEN I go -- I try to wait until the movie's been out for a while, crowd control, etc. I'm not saying its the perfect experience by any means, but having grown up a movie lover, I've just always loved actually being in a theater. So many memories...

And the though of kids growing up one day, never having made out in a dark movie theater is frightening...
