I've done some research to spot my problem but, so far, I seem the only one with this problem. Whenever I watch a blu-ray movie with the PS3, I loose the image for a fraction of a second, the screen turns black (the sound is not affected) and it is random. There is no pattern. It can happen once or 2-3 time during the movie. Needless to say that it's very annoying. Otherwise, everything is perfect (image and sound). I've tried several things but to no avail.
I bought the receiver so i could enjoy my blu-ray movies in uncompressed sound. When i do so, I set the HDMI audio output format on LPCM. Here is my set-up : HDTV : Sony kdl-40xbr3 Receiver : Denon avr-3808CI PS3 60 gb (bought only to watch blu-ray movies) Cables : 2 x 4 ft. Monster M850 HDTV HDMI cable The PS3 is connected with HDMI in the HDMI #2 on the receiver (HDP) and the receiver is connected in the TV with HDMI. It's been a week since I have the receiver and the problem occurs since then. Before, the PS3 was hooked by optical connection to a Denon avr-1506 and the HDMI was connected directly in the TV and I NEVER had a problem whatsoever. At first, I tought it was the cables but I exchanged them for two new one. I have updated the firmware on the receiver - no change; I have the latest firmware on the PS3 (1.93); I have done a reset on the PS3 (on standby mode hold the start button for 5 seconds and recalibrate) - no change; I've tried several settings changes on the receiver : put i/p scaler to off, set the resolution to auto or 1080p, turn off auto Lip Sync, put the input mode to either auto or HDP, put video select to source or HDP, put the video convert on or off, etc. I tried every possible combination of the above with no luck. Any help would be welcome. Thanks ! |

Try this: Hook up the digital optical cable to the receiver. Set the PS3 to deliver audio through the optical cable and video via HDMI through the receiver. See if you still have the same problem. If you do, then the receiver is at fault. fuad |

i have the same reciever and also use the PS3 and have not had these problems i have not updated the firmware at all... maybe try a master reset i think it tells you how to do this in the manual. If that does not fix the problem i would get a replacement

Thank you for your input, it's a very good idea. I will test it today.

![]() Stupid question, but as you have a very similar setup as mine, is there a particular order in which to power on the devices ? (for HDCP check). I always open the TV first, then the receiver and finally the PS3. Last edited by gral1970; 10-22-2007 at 11:19 AM. |

I tried it and the problem is still there. As you said, the receiver must be at fault. I also tried another HDMI input on the receiver thinking it might be the problem; no luck. I will try to get a replacement. |

I would check out the Denon thread at AVS - seems to have gone through a lot already with the 3808 and 4308 receivers
Denon 3808 & 4308 Bugs, undesired features, and enhancements desired http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=887746 |

Most people that have problems have DVI to HDMI setup.. DVI gotta be the worst TV connector ever created. I know people that had problems with DVI to HDMI, but so far i never had a bad experience with HDMI to HDMI. Trying to plug a DVI device is running to get trouble..

Digital Work or it does, it work it Voltage, if the voltage trigger for a moment under a certain level you loose something. One of you're cable might be wrong. Try different brand.. or try Monoprice.com AVG 24 gauge cable, if it's not working, they will refund you... |

![]() I already exchanged the two cables. At first, I had two 8 ft. Monster M850 HDTV HDMI cables (bought brand new with the receiver). I exchanged them for two 4 ft. Monster M850 HDTV HDMI (part #: M850HD-4) thinking it could be a defect in one of the two cables or that the cables were too long. It changed nothing. Furthermore, when the PS3 is hooked directly in the TV with the same cable, no problem... These cables should be more than enough for my setup : they're labeled as "Ultra High Speed" cables by Monster themselves. http://www.monstercable.com/press/vi...sp?Article=132 So I really think that the receiver have a problem. I bought it at Dumoulin. I called the salesman yesterday for an exchange and he agreed for that (thank God!). He has to find one in another store (they are rare) and he will call me back. I can't wait to see if it will solve the problem I'm having. Last edited by gral1970; 10-23-2007 at 10:52 AM. |

Thanks for the link but I was already aware of this thread (and other threads related to Denon Avr-3808) at AVS. As I said, so far i seem the only one with this odd problem.

I just had a similar problem with the Denon 4308CI. I had it for 5 months when all of the sudden I'd got periodic momentary loss of video and audio for all devices connected via HDMI. Its frequency increased over the last week so I called Crutchfield and they said they'd do a one time warranty replacement on it. I'm hoping the HDMI bugginess won't rear its head twice. I'm cautious since whatever it was up lay dormant for 5 whole months. ![]() Just letting you know I went through the same ordeal switching out cables, changing settings and testing individual pieces of equipment. I know this isn't much help but.
I have had my ps3 lose its "handshake" with my projector via HDMI. It only happened when I played GoW2 when the cut scenes played. If it was the "in game" cut scenes using the game engine it was fine but when it went to the CGI ones lost picture for up to 10 seconds. I assume this happened because there was a break in the video signal. I had to reconfigure my ps3 to component out on the a/v multi out just for this game. I run my HDMI straight to my projector. FWIW I am glad you posted this problem. I was really looking forward to getting a 4308 but now I may wait longer. I am also sorry to hear you are having trouble like this, that sucks. I assume this happens with all your blu-rays not just a few? For the record I think HDMI is ghey. I really don't see what is so damn hard about hooking up you gear the old way. Have been doing that for years with no BS like this happening. |

I have a very similar problem and I am wondering if you've found a solution or did you end up getting the receiver replaced? Thank you. |

I have that problem, but only when I am watching television, never during a movie on my ps3 or while playing games. It does cut out for about 1-2 seconds, but keeps the audio, no video, then video reappears. Only while on TV though.

I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-92TXH receiver (not Denon) but the same thing happens whenever I play a Blu-ray movie either through my PS3 or Panasonic player.
I sincerely think it is an HDMI handshake problem, but whether it is the fault of the receiver or cables, I don't know. I think that HDMI is the most problematic connection ever invented. I haven't yet seen the benefit for the consumer -- just hassles! |

Did you try to update the firmware of the receiver? Or try a different display?
I have the same receiver and PS3 but I connect the HDMI cable to the receiver to pass the sound only while the picture is via component to my TV and didn't experience this problem. I still get a 1080p picture on my plasma. Last edited by Ben123; 05-28-2008 at 12:32 AM. |
