Default PS3 playing 4:3 aspect DVDs on 16:9 aspect TV

Okie doke, I've hit a really nice level of annoyance this morning, especially since I can't figure out for the life of me why this happened.

I'm playing some old 4:3 DVDs on my PS3, and between it and my TV, it gets streched to 16:9. Which is not a situation that occurs with my AIWA DVD player [which connects via Component].

PS3, Samsung TX-R3079WH... Connected via HDMI.

Further fun is that checking the options, I'm either suffering from it being too early or just plain missing it, since I can't find any option that indicates why it would be autostreching PS3 wise. Now, I can change the TV aspect ratio to 4:3, and it works, it's just slightly frustrating [a lil more with anime since they have this nasty tendancy of not listing OAR].

I'm just hoping someone else can help me figure out what I'm doing stupid here .

if it is a straight up DVD, it won't be upscaling (yet, wait for the update) so set your PS3 output to 480i and it should work.

as for stretching, I know that is something internal to my TV, could that be the issue?

That's what I'm trying to figure out, the output displays at 480p on it's own when I start outputting, the thing is, I don't remember the streching occuring with my DVR/Digital Cable [the device I previously had connected via HDMI].

My wife has informed me it happened with my old AIWA player so I'm prone to suspect it's just a case of difference with the DVR actually being 'smart' enough to pre-render the proper aspect ratio instead of leaving it to the TV.

My PS3 has only stretched one movie

The covenant I rented on DVD (blu-ray copy out of stock.) and accidentally put the 4:3 side in the ps3.

Other than that all my other 4:3 movies play fine.
