I'm looking into adding an HD Tivo to my setup. I currently do not have a cable box but I get HBO and my tv unscrambles some random HD channels. My question is what is the role of the cable cards? Could I still receive my current channels without the cards? While on topic of Tivo boxes, does anyone recommend lifetime service? Thanks for any help.

You'll need the cable cards for cable company's feed. They allow Tivo to work as a tuner. I believe you can also set up the Tivo to work with over the air hookups, but I doubt you'll still receive HBO hooked up as such.
tivo community forums can help with both questions... |
