Default Cable question

I have recently purchased a Samsung LN-T4681F tv. It is amazing. I have it hooked up with a 16 foot monster 1000m series hdmi cable, recommended by best buy. I need to return the cable because it is to short to run through the wall behind my fire place, outside, and back inside accros the room. Any suggestions on another quality cable (25 ft.) that will hold up being placed in the wall and outside in the cold?

Best Buy carries some really long HDMI cables on their website. Some high end home theater stores might even be able to make one for you.

Do I need something that is that expensive? Will the cold affect it that much?

It is going to be hard to find something that long and cheap. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Christ you paid how much for the TV and now you are complaining about the cost of a very long HDMI?

I guess my question is do I need an expensive cable? Arent they all the same, all carry a digital signal? Do they have good cables online? Anyone have a website? Or do I need something that will hold up outside?

There are many threads on this pretaining to HDMI cabling. The consesus is that with long runs (8ft+) high grade cabling is ideal. Plus, it will just be hard to find a cheap HDMI cable at that length.

UL and CL are the same thing. These will be fine because they have plastic shielding. Any one of those will work. How well they will work, I am not sure.

Why is the cable going outside? Digital is digital yes, but over long lengths signal may be lost. With the grade of TV you have (it is a great TV by the way), why not get the best cable you can. Ask an associate where you bought it. Maybe find an installer who will know what he is doing. UL certifies the CL rating.

The TV is mounted above my fireplace. On either side of the fireplace are glass french doors. Therefore, I have to run the cables behind my fireplace, outside and under the doors, then back in to the right hand side corner where I can place my boxes, out of the way.

Monoprice cables are pretty nice, actually. Be sure you go with their highest grade cable and NOT the tin plated copper.

Also, please be patient while you await help on the forums. This is a very helpful place, but if you type in all caps, post multiple threads and act like you are going to have a panic attack if someone doesn't respond immediately, you'll find that folks are less interested in helping.

Thanks.

Why not run down below the floor? To run outside seems problamatic.

I have hardwood floors, therefore, I dont want to drill through them.

Will I be able to see a reduction in picture quality going from my monster 16 ft. to the mono 25 ft.?

I bought a 50ft DVI cable from RAM electronics which seems to work well with 720p. I think they'd let you know what cables are good enough for your application.

I hear Monoprice offers some the best values around for cabling and "stuff".

perhaps you should take a picture, i use to install home theater systems and had some wacky jobs... it would help to see what kind of situation you are in.

If you're doing custom work -- and are interested in the best value cables (and possibly including installation) but *not* going as cheap as possible -- I'd suggest contacting Black Box.

I've been using them for custom work (ranging from a catalog purchase of under $100 to large custom installs of several tens of thousands of dollars) for almost 30 years. Hell, I remember them from the days when their "black box" RS232 switches were hot stuff. I've never had a problem with them or any of their equipment, also their warranties are some of the best in the industry. I loved it when they came out with their "Fido" warranty several years back. In fact, I've never met anyone who has ever had any significant problems with them.
