Default 20% off 20GB PS3 in Japan

http://kotaku.com/gaming/top/japanes...ces-230297.php

This isn't good. Sony needs to get on the ball with more (quality) game releases for this thing.

This is true, but I really think that most J6P people in the US or Japan are unaware of the PS3's Blu-ray movie playback capabilities. I think this is an area that Sony (or the BDA) should take leadership on and drive home to the masses (at least until better games come out for it).

I think it is likely that PS3 will not succeed in the way that the PS2 did. In fact I think it is not unrealistic that PS3 will end up 3rd in the console wars. That being said, I think Blu-ray will still win because of the PS3. Even if PS3 sells much less then forecast, you are still going to have a large install base of Blu-ray players. This will probably allow Blu-ray to outsell HD-DVD by 5:1 or maybe 10:1. I think the biggest problem for PS3 when it comes to the console wars is the $600 (or $500) price tag. I bought the PS3 for the blu-ray capabilities, but I would never spend $600 for a video game system. When standalone Blu-ray players hit $500 and less, a large segment of potential PS3 buyers will be eliminated. Just to be fair I think an X-BOX 360 is overpriced at $400 for something that doesn't even play high-def movies. I hope PS3 sales improve relative to expectations, but as long as I get Final Fantasy in high def thats all that matters.

i think your right bataylor1314 but i think the ps3 will become 2 with around 50 million consoles. for a couple of reasons:

1. technology is to bleeding edge lol blu-ray and cell.
2.xbox one year head start
3. people are cheap and have little care for value(at lest in north america)
(wii isn't that cheap just 20$ less then basic xbox 360)
4. the ps2 is still selling relatively good and still making good games for it

This sales had supposed to continue till Feb. 14. But, actually all these 20G models have been sold out in three days. This sales has been already ended.

For that discount i can see why...if that was here in the states they would not even last that long just for the blu-ray alone

I don't think the PS3 will end up in 3rd place due to the current data. According to analysts, in 2005, the Xbox360 sold over 350,000 units in the US by the end of 2005.

The PS3 sold over 660,000 units in the same amount of time. I believe the source was NPD.

Exactly. The zealots have gone pretty quiet about that launch.

Let's look at reality:

Sony dumped about 300K PS/3 into North America in the last weeks of 2006 to hit there 1 million target. We saw lots of stock appear in stores.

Sony dumped about 400K PS/3 into Japan through Jan 15 to hit their 1 million target (two weeks late). We see lots of stock appear in stores.

A sudden supply flush driven by marketing and financial market pressures is being equated to a lack of demand by the zealots everywhere. Let's see if those units manage to stay in stock.

As I posted on AVSF, I think the price cut is just to clear the stock. After all, the 20GB has a minimum price set but not the 60GB.

With the ramp up for the worldwide launch in March, I think it's cheaper for Sony in the long run to just make 60GB than make two different units. They can eliminate two different packagings, manual, mold, and QC testing lines.

But that's what I think. I also think if Ken Kutaragi/Kaz Hirai is true to his word, that line might be taken up by PS3 Media Center.
