Default First combo BD/SACD music-only release!

Just got an e-mail from 2L, a Norwegian record label that specializes in high-quality CD and SACD releases (mainly jazz), announcing a new combo Blu-ray disc and SACD release of classical string works. Looks exciting! Read the details in the link below:

NO worries - it didn't have its own thread yet!
I think this release is phenominal and I look forward to a real comparison between a DXD source presented as 24/192 PCM and DSD.

Default SACD + Blu-ray Hybrid out of Norway

For those who have been asking if Blu-ray might replace SACD -- here's a first (according to their website) hybrid disc.

I think it will have two discs:

(1) Hybrid CD/SACD disc
(2) Blu-ray disc with

- 5.1 LPCM 24BIT/192 kHz
- 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio 24BIT/192 kHz
- 5.1 Dolby True HD 24BIT/192 kHz

That second one should prove to be an interesting reference disc for those wanting to compare LPCM with TrueHD and DTS-HD MA.

It looks to be two separate discs. It will be interesting to see how the Neil Young Blu-ray music Anthology turns out. It could really open some new doors for music fans, especially those looking for high-end audio.

Unfortunately, it's prohibitively expensive. Something like $40.

Yeah, the title should read SACD Hybrid + Blu-ray, but man, I was REALLY excited there for a second.

Technically, as you may know, this is possible. But unlikely.

Possible, yes. It's the same replication technique that JVC patented for Blu-ray/DVD hybrids, that are also going nowhere. I saw the thread title and for a moment thought one of the companies that made replication equipment had actually followed through on the idea.

Oh, well. I can see how it would be confusing for people who've never really bought into SACDs, though, as they would see the press release mention both SACD and Blu-ray and call the SACD disc a hybrid. (For anyone wondering, an SACD hybrid is a dual layered disc with one SACD layer and one CD layer for compatibility with standard CD playes.)

Post World's first Blu-ray record pressing

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/05/30/blu_ray_audio/

Quote:
It’s usually pop-stars and rock bands that break musical records. But a Norwegian record label has set a new standard for audio pleasure by releasing the world’s first Blu-ray record.

The HD recording of Norwegian orchestra Trondheimsolistene uses five separate sound tracks and, according to the record label 2L, provides sound "like nothing you’ve heard before". It’s also claimed that each instrument is “clearly positioned” to create a "multidimensional listening experience of utmost clarity".

The Blu-ray release is compatible with the PlayStation 3. However, because very few people have the right equipment to take advantage of such musical mastering, the record label’s also bundling in a copy of the performance that’s compatible with CD players.

Trondheimsolistene's record is available to buy online – here.

I don't think the term "record pressing" is really accurate here, but I approve of music on Blu.

Good news. I hope this is a sign of the next generation high end audio format now that SACD and DVD-A are pretty stagnant, as far as new releases that is.

^^ I hope so too. Too bad the recorded works here don't interest me too much. I think I'll end up buying it just for the DSD/192 comparison

Why would music BD succeed where music DVD failed? I know there was some valid reason behind it failing, but anyone remember why?
