Can the Onkyo 606/605 do7.1 from HDMI

Hi, Does any one know the answer?

BD disc feeding say Dolby HD multi Chanel (5.1) via hdmi.
can you process this to one of the 7.1 modes
or can this only done when feeding sound from the core via coax/optical

606/605 can't matrix 5.1 encoded sources to 7.1

If the dvd/bluray is 7.1 encoded, then your good......If its 5.1, then your gonna get 5.1

For music, my mp3 player plays in 7.1

I appreciate your answer, but what is crucial does it have the ability to process the hd sound signal when its sent digitally through the hdmi

I have found that the 605 does have modes that will extend 5.1 to 7.1 if the audio is received as a bitsteam. Unfortunately, since I use a PS3 as the player, I've only been able to try this with DD or DTS core, not HD audio.

I'd be curious to hear from anyone with a 605 and a player that will bitstream HD audio.

I can confirm that if the 605 receives 5.1 audio as LPCM, it will not extend it to 7.1

Yes. I use an HDMI cable with the 605, and I am able to hear the HD audio.

Yes but can you implement one of the Dolby/DTS 7.1 dsp to the hd signal

606 yes. it will take 5.1 true hd select PlIIx as listening mode and you get 7.1...
