Question Laptop blu-ray playback.. what do i need?

I have a HP dv9000 laptop. I know it can play HD content, and it also has an HDMI out... but i am wondering if anyone knows if i can play Blu-Ray discs on my laptop with solely an external blu-ray drive. The laptop has an nVidia GeForce GO 7600 Video card, 2 gigs of ram, and an intel Core2 CPU. Thanks for any information you guys can provide.

What HD Playback Software do you have? I highly recommend Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra or Deluxe.

I do have PowerDVD Ultra... the one thing i am wondering about is what kind of drive to get now. I know there won't be an external BD-ROM drive out until philips/lite-on combines for their release in april. Can i make an external drive out of an enclosure and perhaps the philips or lite-on internal pc drive? If so, what kind of external enclosure should i get? I was looking around on newegg, but there are hundreds of them on there, and i don't know where to start.

Deluxe can't play BD. Ultra can.

yes, you can. I tried BD drive externally, and its fine. Now, it's installed internally into my HP laptop, replacing original HD DVD drive. Mind that I heard rumour that it will shorten the life of your drive (if it's laptop drive, which means just connecting it via USB). Also, it's extremely unstable if you want to play DVD - sometimes it can read DVD, but sometimes, it can't. If you are using Desktop drive, then you'll have no trouble. I suggest though, you replace the optical drive with BD drive - installing it internally. I suggest look at ebay for UJ-210 (it's panasonic/matsushita) BD-burner

w_tanoto, how much did you pay for the UJ-210? I was thinking about getting one... but just wanted to make sure that my setup was good to run it before i got an internal drive... also, what kind of external drive did you have? I am interested in possibly just getting an external for now (probably cheaper)

£262.
You can just make UJ-210 external by using USB enclosure.. Ask for it when buying. Normally the seller will give it for free. But if you want to install it internally, you have to unscrew it (I think there are 2 screws)

Default I have put a UJ-220 in an external case. It did not work

Are you sure the UJ-210 is compatible with an external case? I have tried two UJ-220 in a known good external case. They do not work, they just get power, and eject. Not able to read any CDs, DVDs, or BluRay...

that depends. I used to use UJ-210 in external case. Now, it's internal. USB 2.0 connection is not stable for optical drive (not enough bandwith I guess). When I put it externally, it has some difficulty reading discs, but when I put it internally using direct IDE laptop connection, no probs. Sometimes it depends on the USB port you are using. (i.e. my left USB ports does not work with USB UJ-210 (not working at all), but my right side USB ports can (unstable though)). Try using different port

USB external blu-ray will not work for blu-ray disc playback. If you connect an external blu-ray drive and plan to watch blu-ray movies you need to instead connect it to firewire/(1394) connection.
