Default Need assistance setting up an Onkyo TX-SR 805

Well, I finally got my 805 from Vanns.com and my fan from coolerguys.com. I unhooked my old Onkyo receiver and started plugging in the speakers to the new receiver. I initially didn't hear any audio but I thought it was normal.

When I got to the front towers they immediately started working. I plugged in the sub and same thing: it worked.

All in all the only speakers working after I hooked everything up were the two fronts and the sub. Neither the center nor any of the surrounds were working.

I'm using a Sony BDP-S1 with the newest firmware updates (v3.80). Since it wasn't working I switched to my other BD player, a Sammy BD-P1000 with the newest updates (v1.5).

Well, nothing worked with either player and I went to BB--very frustrated I may add--to buy banana plugs. On the way back I stopped by Wally World to buy a new wire stripper recommended by Billy Mays (and that thing really works!).

Well, the speakers are STILL not working. Am I missing something or did I get a defective receiver? I have HDMI cables going in and out of the receiver.

The image is superb, the audio not quite. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

V

How are you checking the speakers? Are you using the amp's built-in test tone? Check with that first, then work backwards. Be sure that the amp knows that the other speakers exist (ie, are set to SMALL or LARGE, not to NONE).

I did that and still the only ones I got sound out of were the fronts and the sub.

I hooked up the mic, ran the test and still got nothing. The screen asked me to verify if the only ones hooked up were the two fronts and the sub. I cancelled the Audissey thingy.

Anything else I should try?

question?

do you have HDMI Audio set to on or off? (should be "OFF")

you can find this setting on page 99 in the user manual. Check and make sure its set to Off.

This might be a silly question, but just double check anyways. Are you in stereo mode? If you are, then you will only get the front L/R and the sub. Make sure you are using the correct listening mode.

Crackinz,

I have it set to "OFF". I switched it to "ON" once for every device I haved hooked up to it and the audio went out through the TV.

This only happened with the Cable Box though, not with the BD player.

MacDaddyO,

I've ran through every surround mode, including the THX ones and I'm still not getting anything.

I'm at work now, but please keep sending me your input. I'll work on it during lunch and after work.

Did you make sure that you have your surround speakers activated in your speaker setup?

I could have been of more help if you asked these questions a few days ago. I'm on the other side of the country for my sisters wedding right now and won't be home to check my own 805 until the end of June... sorry.

Have you run Audyssey? I do not use the equilizer settings from the Audyssey setup, but it works well for adjusting levels and distances. It will also sense a 5.1 or 7.1 setup and turn the resulting speakers on or off. You can manually turn speakers on or off in the speaker setup page as well.

How many zones do you have it running on? I had an older onkyo that would only play stereo sound in region A if region B was activated as well. Is there an icon indicating regions A and B being active? I would suggest turning off the second region in order to enable your surrounds.

Again, mine was an older receiver so this may not be consistent with current models.

Good luck.

I didn't even mess with any of the zones. I made room for it in my entertainment center, plugged it in and started connecting the speakers. The only ones to work were the ones I mentioned earlier.

Has anyone been through something like this before? I've been switching receivers for the last 10 years from Kenwoods (when I was younger and didn't know any better) to Onkyos and I've never experienced anything like this. It's really upsetting me, because I'd hate to pack it back up and send it back for repairs/trade.

OK, I went home during my lunch break and tried switching speakers.

STILL, no sound from the center or surrounds. I am so frustrated right now it's not even funny.

To make things worse, I removed the little cap of the back of one of the connectors in my right tower so I could move the banana plugs to the lower connectors and the little cap spiraled down the power dome (or whatever that metal thing is on the back of the speaker) and went INTO the air vent down to the inside of the speaker.

I'm so pissed right now I can't even see straight.

it sounds like the reciver is stuck in some form of two channel audio (you get sound through the fronts correct?)...so its either a setting somewhere, or ...hate to say it...defective receiver.

So right now, lets assume its a two channel mode of some sort...then if we have beaten a dead horse maybe time to assume its the Receiver.

I got my 805 last Friday. I did the same exact thing and all worked out perfect for me. Sorry to rub it in (I am sad for you!) but there must be something wrong in the set-up, or worse, a bad unit...

Good luck! I will run through the set-up later and try to think of something you may have missed.

Crakinz and Blu Ray Fan,

The surround speakers were activated. Listen to this: I took the unit to Sound Advice and the rep tried making it work. He said there might be something wrong with the circuitry in the back.

Funny thing is, since he mentioned "circuitry" Circuit City came to mind. They sell Onkyo products there, so I put Big Diesel (yes, I gave it a nickname) back in the trunk of my car and drove there. I saw that they had an open box TX-SR 805 for $550 and I bought it.

I brought it home, hooked it up--gotta love banana plugs--and works like a charm. Of course, being an open box item there's no remote, no Audissey mic, no manuals, etc., but I have all those items from the new (and defective) one I got from Vanns.com. It's crazy, but I have two 805s now ... any advice on what to do with the broken one will be greatly appreciated. I'd hate to have a $599 paperweight sitting around.
