Default Audiophille ,, Stupid here

Looking for some insite on getting good sound. For xmas I got the Sony STR-DG800 because of the HDMI, at the time I had a upconvert DVD and I wanted that whole experience. I found that I could only get the sound through my reciever by hooking the HDMI from the DVD (now PS3 BTW) to the TV, then running a fiber optic cable from the TV to the reciever. Is this the only way to get the whole "HDMI" experience with out getting a $2000 Denon? or did I do something wrong? I was frustrated that I couldnt get sound throught the HDMI so I took that reciever back and am using my Sony STR-DE545, which has no HDMI connections at all. I have my PS3 connected to my TV, and the opitic cable from the TV to the reciever. I get sound and it sounds ok, although on this reciever, when the DTS sound kicks in ther is this blue light that comes on, and it has yet to come on playing my BR movies. I know I must have done something wrong with the DG800, and I have no ideal what I am doing with my current DE545. I love the picture, it looks great so, I know i must have the video portion working right, just not the sound. Not sure if it matters, but my TV is a Sony KDF-E50A10.

I will take any help.
Jake

The major problem with the DG800, is that it won't decode audio over HDMI. You have to upgrade to the DG1000 for that. The way you have it hooked up now is the same way that most people have it hooked up. However you won't be able to enjoy any PCM soundtracks or anything encoded with TrueHD or DTS-MA.

There are receivers that are way under $2000, and will allow you to decode audio over HDMI. There are some receivers from Onkyo and Panasonic that get great reviews and can be found for less than $500.

If I were you, I would wait a while until more companies release more AV receivers with HDMI and Dolby TrueHD and DTSHD decoding. I got a PS3 so I can only listen to LPCM through HDMI. I have a SONY STR-DG1000 and it gets the job done but I know there will be better sounding receivers in the future. My Integra 8.3 does a better job with Superman Returns (Dolby Digital Plus over optical).

Must say, I think I was ready when I bought my Denon AVR 3806 a year ago.
Now it seems (I didn't know the difference than) that it accepts audio over hdmi, so pcm is no problem, but it does not accept FULLHD 1080p.

I planned to get a sony FullHD projector when the prices come down a little. And that, combined with the ps3 we will be getting in march in Europe would be a nice combo.

Know I'm thinking of buying just a HDReady projector, wich cost a lot less, but I'm not sure about projecting on a 3 meter screen.

So if you buy an AVR, with hdmi, make sure it transmits 1080p signal.

I also am in the same boat. I am ready for a sound setup, but hdmi 1.3 is just around the corner, and most hdmi receivers these days have compromises (either too expensive, no 1080p, doesnt transmit audio, etc etc) so i havent jumped in yet. Sucks. Im sure by xmas 07, things will be sorted out.
