Default Kingdom of Heaven issue

I bought this movie not too long ago and played it yesterday for the first time. Here's the problem, I get 5 channel sound from both the menu and the theatrical trailer but not the movie itself. This is very disappointing. I have the PS3. I think this is a disk problem in terms of the encoding. Let me know what you all think. Thanks.

It's definitely not the disc, since I'm getting 5.1 just fine on my PS3. What kind of receiver do you have? Which audio and video connection(s) are you using? What are the audio/video output settings on your PS3?

I have a JVC receiver, it's probably about 7 yrs old now. The video connection I'm using is the HDMI and the sound is the optical out to my receiver. The BD/DVD setting for the optical out is Bitstream. It was originally set to Linear PCM but I was only getting 2 channel for everything when I had it on that. I can get 5 channel sound from Click and Talladega nights without a problem. I just find it weird that I can get 5 channel on the trailer and the disk menu but not the movie.

Can the receiver decode DTS?
Maybe with dvd's you are decoding DTS in the dvd player and not the receiver?

If you meant that you got no sound at all that is.

No, it can't do DTS. This receiver came out when Dolby Digital first came out.

That's the problem right there. The only audio on Kingdom of Heaven is DTS-HD MA. So out of optical, with bitsteam selected, the only 5.1 audio you can get is the core DTS track within the MA track.

The menus and trailer are encoded with Dobly Digital, so that's why you are able to hear those.

Yeah, it's definitely the receiver. Just about every receiver nowadays can decode both DD and DTS. If you've already invested in an HD display with HDMI, you've definitely got the scratch to replace a 7-year-old sound system. I'd invest in an HDMI receiver, which can go for decent prices nowadays. You could wait until bitstream-decoding HDMI 1.3 receivers come out in the summer or fall, or let the PS3 do the decoding to PCM and go with any of the current options, such as the Sony STRDG1000, Denon 2307CI or 2807, Panasonic XR57 (only has one HDMI input though), or the Onkyo SR604 or SR704.

Pick up the Onkyo 604. Fairly cheap and you can connect through HDMI.

Ok, thanks for the info guys. I'll just have to live with the 2 channel for a while. After getting my tv and the ps3, I'd better lay back for quite some time. Plus I have vacations planned in the upcoming year. I need to win the lottery I guess...
