I'm considering upgrading from the 605 to the 805. The biggest selling point to me is going from 80 watts per channel, to 130 watts....I know very little about watts per channel....the additional 50 watts per channel...wiill that enhance the sound quality? Anyone that owns a 805 or those who have might of made the same upgrade, please fill me in! is it worth upgrading based on watts per channel? or other reasons?
( I'm aware of the size diffrence, and the additional hdmi input, and the matrixing of 7.1 with the 805) |

The 805 has the same amplifier section as the 905 which accounts for its weight, but the 805 only upconverts component video upto 720P. if you have a 1080P television I would look at the 875 if you are using component cables. This was the only downfall I saw after I bought my 805. Other than that I really like the 805 considering I have always owned Sony receivers. The 805 also has the Burr Brown DAC's as well. I recommend going to a local store in your area and checking out the receiver, I played with an 805 at our local Fry's.

There are lots of reasons the 805 will sound better, but the extra 50W is probably not one of them. The processing, specifically the Burr-Brown D/A converters, would be the biggest factor. However, unless you have fairly nice quality speakers, you may not notice much of a change at all.
