Default Onkyo 605 vs 805

Ok...well Just got my tax refund and want to invest in a new receiver so I can get all this great HD audio from blu-ray. I'm looking at both the Onkyo 605 and 805 receiver. Other than the power difference (90w vs 130w) what are the major differences between the two?? For someone who's a novice in audio...am I going to notice the difference? I"m looking at amazon right now...$397.99 for the 605...and $799.99 for the 805 (big difference!) Thanks guys!

Why not include the 705?

One of the biggest differences to take into account (other than the power, which can play a factor in the quality of sound outputted) is the 3 HDMI imputs on the 805 vs the 1 HDMI input on the 605. Futureproofing your purchase with the ability to add other components via HDMI into your home theatre setup is a crucial element in my opinion. Also, I belive the 805 has better video upconverting abilities than the 605.

805 has 192K/24 bit Burr-brown DACs. That should be ample reason.

Also it up scales to 1080p, has more HDMI inputs and it's THX Ultra2 certified

i own the 805...
besides the better DACs ... the biggest feature is the amp and power supply section. with a "push pull" design...the amp is well known for its effortless dynamics and sheer power. it has been bench tested @ 163w/ch with 5 channels driven. at full volume the power supply can draw over 9 amps. note that its over 50 lbs and by design, runs MUCH warmer than comparable receivers...even in standby(off) mode. will you notice a difference between the 605 (or even 705, for that matter)? mated to quality speakers... YES, no doubt.
its widely known as The Beast... and rightfully so.
other 805 features worth noting:
- 3 hdmi in
-bi-amping capable
- if you have a sacd player... support DSD over hdmi (processing & direct mode)

enjoy!

comparing the 605 and the 805 is easy. theyre like two very different receivers. not sure why the 705 was skipped, but 705 and a 805 are a little closer together.

of the two you specified i would say 805 hands down.

Default 605 and 805 have same scaler abilities NO 1080P

BOTH THE 605 AND 805 (ALSO THE 705) HAVE THE SAME Faroudja DCDi SCALER UPTO 720p.

This is a very large mistake many buyers of the 805 have made. I ended up buying the 875 as it will do 1080p upscaling.

FROM THE USER MANUAL 805/875

805
3 HDMI
inputs, 1 output (Version 1.3a)
• HDMI up-conversion of composite video, S-Video,
and component video sources (720p capable)

875
HDMI up-conversion of composite video, S-Video,
and component sources (720p, 1080i, 1080p capable)

The only major differences going from the 605-805

1. the power output 130 watts RMS for the 805
Power output for the 605 is 90 watts RMS

2 The 605 CANNOT DO FRONT SPEAKER BRIDGING 805 CAN

3 Video scaler in the 605 is the Faroudja DCDi (720P capable)
Video scaler in the 805 is the EXACT SAME
THE 875/905 HAVE THE REON-VX hqv scaler that is 1080p capable

4. THE 605 IS NOT THX CERTIFIED
THE 705 IS THX SELECT
THE 805 IS THX ULTRA 2 CERTIFIED

5 605 IS HIGH CURRENT OUTPUT @ 36amps
805 is 60 amps

6. 805 has Dual PUSH-PULL amplifier Design

7 805 has Certified 4ohms performance
605 doesn't

8 HDMI inputs 2/605 and 3/805

9 DSP Type / QTY 32bit 605-1, 805-3

10 805 has BURR-BROWN DAC'S

11 605 has 5 band Multi-Band Speaker EQ
805 has 7 band

12 AUTO MIC SPEAKER CALIBRATION
605 (Audyssey 2EQ)
805 (Audyssey MultEQ XT)

Anyways there are some few very very minor difference's between the 2 models .

These ones I have listed are the MAJOR and NOT SO MAJOR differences between the 2, If I have missed any please feel free to quote and add them.

AGAIN THE 805 AND ALL LOWER MODELS WILL NOT DO 1080P UPSCALING!! I MYSELF WAS GOING TO BUY THE 805 UNTIL I READ THE SMALL PRINT IN THE SPECIFICATIONS FROM ONKYO'S WEBSITE THAT ARE NOTED BY ASTERICS.

I THINK MOST PEOPLE KNOW THAT!!! WHY ARE WE WRITING IN CAPS ABOUT IT???
I knew it didn't upscale to 1080p, but I don't care about upscaling through the receiver, if I'm going to upscale it'll be through the source. No way I'm spending $500+ just for the extra video processing. My 805 does what I want it to, and passes my already upscaled signal through.

Hello Rike255,

I am sure that YOU don't care about upscaling in a receiver or really anything I had to say in my original post. Since this post was posted by BANGO and not by you.

I wrote everything out that I am aware most or alot of people know but it was for the people who don't know and wish to know the differences. Especially since it is a very common misconception that the 805 will upscale to 1080p and it actually will not do this.

I was/am trying to help a user that is interested in purchasing a 605/805.
There are many members of this and other forums that write about the 605/805 and say many things that are not correct and can cause a user to purchase the item based on incorrect/misunderstood information provided by forum members.

For instance in AVSFORM i have read of users purchasing the 805 based on incorrect information provided by unknowing users and they have then been stuck with a unit that does not do all the things they were under the impression that it did do.

So I apologize for writing a huge reply in big bold capital letters but I do this so interested buyers are aware of "actual" features and not "I think" features causing them to buy something and have it be a waste of time and money and then they must return/exchange/or take a loss /or even just keep it and suck it up; because they cant return the unit they have purchased.

I don't mean or intend to offend anyone who has stated facts they misunderstood but I am just trying to let users know of the very common "misunderstood" or just "wrong" facts that have been stated by users.

BANGO I hope that I have helped you in understanding the differences and misconceptions some users have made/claim and that you make your purchase from informed opinions and/or from owners of any of the mentioned units.

I to am considering either the 805 or the 875. I am concerned on somethings I have read with the 875 upscaler to 1080p. Is it true you can't adjust the screen ratio between sd. So sd shows are stretched? I hate that I can't watch something distorted from stretching. Also the brightness and other controls are off and require tweaks. If so will it look different when playing games vs. cable or blu rays? Or do you just adjust the settings once and it looks that way on all sources, (don't wanna have to change from every source). I use a logitech remote so once something is right where I want it I put the remote away and use my universal remote.
Overall how good it the the upconversion from a 480i source? My sony kds60a3ooo does a couple little tweaks already ie. noise reduction and drc pallate. Will the 875 put those to shame from cable. Is it worth the extra 600$$ for the 875 vs. the 805? Any input would be great!

Please clarify???

Hello, as far as the scaler in the 875 and the stretching goes. If I set my TV to Natural or Native the picture does get stretched (even though the 875 is set to 16:9)

My LCD TV Toshiba 42" 1080p Regza has a 4:3 HD screen mode which makes the picture 4:3 (unstretched)

As far as I can tell the TV has the final say of the picture being either 4:3/16:9 when upscaling the 480i/p 4:3 picture.

So if your Sony has a 4:3 setting then you should be OK
If not and you (same as me) cant stand the 4:3 picture being stretched then I really would not recommend the 875. But if you're Sony (like my Toshiba) has a 4:3 setting as one of the picture layout setting modes then you should be fine with an 875. Hope this helps you out
