Default Joyride (1977) Cinématographe

Quote:
Three disaffected youths in California – couple John (Robert Carradine, The Long Riders) and Mary (Melanie Griffith, Body Double) along with their friend Scott (Desi Arnaz Jr., A Wedding) – abruptly quit their jobs and take a ferry headed to Alaska in the pursuit of a new life running a salmon fishing business. Shortly after arriving, they are robbed, spurring a ripple effect of violence and its repercussions.

An inspired amalgamation of road movie, dark comedy and crime drama, JOYRIDE is a defiantly unclassifiable slice of 70s Americana deftly directed by esoteric genre filmmaker Joseph Ruben (The Pom Pom Girls, The Stepfather) and produced by noted exploitation impresario Samuel Z. Arkoff (The Wild Angels, Boxcar Bertha). Featuring energetic cinematography by Stephen M. Katz (Messiah of Evil, The Blues Brothers), Cinématographe is proud to present this often overlooked gem of 1970s malaise in a new 2K restoration from its 35mm interpositive, making its world blu-ray debut!

directed by: Joseph Ruben
starring: Desi Arnaz Jr., Robert Carradine, Melanie Griffith, Anne Lockhart

Great news! Will definitely be getting this one.

Once it hits it's standard release, of course. No room for bloated packaging.

The soundtrack on the blu-ray will most likely be the "Special Home Video Version" soundtrack that appeared on the Vestron Video VHS:

Instant purchase for me. Much of it was shot in the general Seattle area, which is a major plus for me as a Seattle native.

I knew the man who has a big fight scene with Robert Carradine. He was a Seattle TV store owner/manager. Also, back in 1969-1970, he was the host of a local TV quiz show entitled HIGH Q. The show pitted local high school kids against each other in the manner of the popular G.E. COLLEGE BOWL national quiz show for college students.

Do we know of any place, any copy, anywhere in the world where the OG version is available?

Considering every single US copy has been edited (all Vestron tapes are edited; the MGM DVD doesn't say either way but per Justin LaLiberty of VS it's edited, Blu-ray says right on the box it's edited), I'd like to see if we can find the original film somewhere.

List of the LP tracks:

Barry Mann– The Best That I Know How
Electric Light Orchestra– Tightrope
Jimmie Haskell– Dancin' In Alaska
Electric Light Orchestra– Can't Get It Out Of My Head
Electric Light Orchestra– Boy Blue
Jimmie Haskell– Eatin' Dog Food
Jimmie Haskell– The Best That I Know How (Instrumental)
Electric Light Orchestra– So Fine
Jimmie Haskell– The Getaway
Electric Light Orchestra– Telephone Line
B5 Electric Light Orchestra– Rockaria!
B6 Jimmie Haskell– Train Stuff 2:24
B7 Barry Mann– The Best That I Know How (Reprise)

I have this on DVD, I was planning to watch it to see if it's worth an upgrade so I'll try to make a note of the songs in that version (unless someone beats me to it).

I'm not familiar with this movie at all but it seems like the music's kinda a big deal, considering the movie had a soundtrack album released and the trailer plays up ELO. (And a certain someone's Letterboxd review mentions "Electric Light Orchestra contributing original music"!)

What we have here is two competing sets of information. Simply put, someone's right and someone's wrong.

So what we need now is someone with both a home video copy and a stream to compare the two.

As far as I know, all home video releases - the original Vestron tapes, both sides of the MGM DVD, and the upcoming Blu-ray - have the exact same soundtrack. So if we can find the intact songs on the stream, we'll really have an interesting scenario. Now, who has both an old copy and the stream, so we can check both out?

So we know for a fact that the Vestron tapes are edited, we know for a fact the upcoming Blu-ray is edited, the only controversies are whether the MGM DVD is edited and whether the stream is edited.

With the DVD, we have people saying it's the original soundtrack and we have people saying it's the edited soundtrack. Someone needs to check the disc, maybe make a video or capture as proof. If it sounds the same as the tape and Blu-ray, we know it's edited. If we get ELO, we know it's the original version. (Also, it's a flipper disc, so check both sides of the disc to see if the tracks are different. Changing the language has worked on some movies, notable National Lampoon's Vacation and Natural Born Killers, so flipping the disc might work here.)

With the stream, again do the same thing. If it sounds like the tape and Blu-ray, it's edited. If it has ELO, it's original.

While we do not have a reference for the original version, we have a reference for the edited version. 32 users on this site had this disc at one point, per the collections page. If one of them still has it, and that same person has Amazon Prime, we at least have someone with the copies in question.

If someone wants to provide time stamps of the music via the streaming copy, I'll check the MGM DVD which I have immediate access to.

On Amazon Prime, I hear "Can't Get It Out of My Head" around 24 minutes in and "Telephone Line" around 1:09:00. I think part of my confusion is I don't understand what songs were replaced in the home video soundtrack. I just assumed all ELO songs were replaced but maybe only some were. Does anyone know the differences between the theatrical and home video soundtracks?

Ok, so here are the songs on the DVD edition (songs only, there are a ton of instrumental music cues - I made notes so if anybody sees a song missing and knows a time code of where it should be I can check). Also worth noting: the opening credits actually have title cards saying "songs by ELO" and "The Best That I Know How" by Barry Mann.

9:30 ELO – Showdown
19:35 Barry Mann– The Best That I Know How
23:30 ELO – Can't Get It Out Of My Head
32:52 ELO - Boy Blue
34:20 ELO – Tightrope
39:45 ELO - So Fine
1:08:40 ELO - Telephone Line
1:12:10 ELO - Rockaria!
1:29:30 Barry Mann– The Best That I Know How (over closing credits)

Yes, the MGM DVD (both the letterbox and full screen versions on it) and the streaming version have all six ELO songs that are on the soundtrack and one ELO song that is not on the soundtrack (Showdown).

The confusion is coming from the "technical specs" on the back cover. It seems to suggest it has the Vestron Video soundtrack ("home video soundtrack") and/or possibly some additional edits ("edited from the original theatrical audio"). The text is confusing and it seem odd that Vinegar Syndrome's description of the movie on their website doesn't mention ELO at all. I don't think we can assume anything about what audio track is on the blu-ray until we have it in our hands.

Thanks for doing that. I pulled it out of storage a few weeks back and thought I had it close by, but it got shuffled somewhere else since and I can't find it now.

Is there source music that isn't ELO or Mann that might be the problem?
Like something playing in a jukebox in a bar scene or on the radio?

That would be my guess. There are several scenes with the car radio playing as well as some bar music that doesn't sound legit, it's just themed generic instrumentals. Probably songs popular at the time that weren't cleared.

Really hope that receives a 4K one day. Such a fun film.

I'll be waiting to watch the 4K with a cold bottle of pink champagne.

Deserves a 4K limited edition by Second Sight. I wonder if that’s a possibility.
