Default onkyo 805 and 7.1

just hooked up my brand new onkyo 805! never experienced high definition sound and it is amazing. Only problem i have experienced so far is not having my rear 2 speakers produce sound on 7.1 movies (such as shoot em up). I am playing movies on the ps3 and I have it set to linear pcm and i manually checked every audio option in sound options. When i look at the ps3 display it says DTS HD - MA and 7.1 is appearing. Any ideas?

Also I hear of people sound mixing so 5.1 movies or games play on all 7 speakers? not sure if I heard it right but would appreciate an explanation how to do so. I found the instruction booklet that came with the receiver to be very bland on how to do things.

to matrix games you might have to uncheck some of the higher 7.1 or 5.1 pcm. a ps3 quirk. not sure about sd dvd but im able to with no issue on blus. if your not getting any sound on your surround back channels you might have them assigned to zone 2 on your receiver. at least that is how my 705 is

I too just bought and hooked up my 805 and I am floored with its performance. I am running 5.1 and not 7.1 so I don't have an issue with the rear speakers. Did you perform the Audyssey setup? secondly on the 805 display are all the speaker blocks present to represent your speaker setup (I.E. Front right, center, Front left, etc..)? Next question would be is your reciever in Multichannel and if so the blocks on the 805 display will have the letters representing the speakers that should be outputting or reproducing the signals being recieved from the PS3. If the block is empty then there will be no sound emitting from that speaker.

I did the setup, it found all 7 speakers and found their position fine, when I am on the xmb all 7 speaker indicators are lit, however when the movie starts only the front 5 are lit and no sound is being produced from the back. The display on the ps3 however still says 7.1.

gonna go mess around with it more, to many options!

shoot em up and select dts ma 7.1 titles will only output from the ps3 in 5.1. its the way it was encoded and the ps3 is decoding. dts has different ways to encoded 7.1 dts ma and this title is one of those with this quirk

check this out

no problem, you can try to matrix it to 7.1 and see if you like that better

That is why it's best to have only 5.1 channels. Screw the 7.1 until it goes main stream. I have the onkyo 805 with 5 speakers with 2 12 inch dual subs. Can I say 5.2 ???

actually, this problem is only on about a half dozen discs that i know of. and "best" is a matter of opinion. i think a lot of people here may disagree with you.

I've been thinking of buying an Onkyo but the receiver + the loudspeakers (good ones) are many thousands of euros. I mean the sound is important but right now good sound is actually more expensive than the Full HD TV and the PS3 together

I don't think Jackeroo75 meant to say it's best to have 5.1 over 7.1. He sounded more like he feels it best to wait till it's worth the money to have 7.1 from all Hi-Def movies instead of the few.

To me I wanted the total 7 surround even with the few movies & games that produce the sound. I really want to have 7.4, but I live in an apt for now.

so, when 5.1 surround is matrixed to 7.1, does the surround back left and right boxes light up? I've been playing 5.1 surround, but I don't have any sound coming from the surround backs. The speakers are set up properly and I get the test-tones in all speakers. When I was playing the Iron Man demo on PS3, all seven boxes lit up for 7.1 surround. I was curious about matrixing 5.1 to 7.1 surround.

I have an 805, and if you set the audio mode to 'neural thx 7.1' you can matrix 5.1 to 7.1. The receiver will still indicate on the display that you are receiving 5.1, but you will hear sound from the rear speakers. I've personally found that the back speakers when doing so are much less active than when a 'working' 7.1 bd is played. The best sound i've heard through the ps3 in 7.1 has been in 'the Golden Compass'...definitely worth checking out. PS...the first true 7.1 disc i tried out was 'shoot em up', and i was also irritated that it wasn't decoding properly through the ps3. such is life.
