Default Where's the 7.1 audio?

I'm new to Blu-Ray and the new Audio codecs. The few movies I've rented all state 5.1 audio via the various codecs options. Are there any 7.1 surround movies out there? If so they seem to be scarce. Does anyone know if that will change?

The majority of films are in 5.1.

I have a capable 5.1 reciever. It doesn't seem worth upgrading to 7.1.

There are a handful of 7.1 titles, including some outstanding films like Oldboy and Pan's Labyrinth. More should be coming out in the future.

That's good news. I picked up an Onkyo 805 for $525 and am going to order the Panisonic BD50. I hope that 7.1 audio for Blu-Ray doesn't go the way of 7.1 on DVD.

Off the top of my head, I know the recent "Rambo" has 7.1 audio as does the new release "The Bank Job".

7.1 is definitely overkill for my requirements. I would definitely have a problem with speaker placement, which I don't atm.

5.1 done properly is usually sufficient though.... If you haven't upgraded, it may be better to wait until prices come down.... they always do on electronics, although speakers retain their value, so possibly upgrade your surrounds etc. and save the other ones for future 7.1 use?

Movies aren't being mastered in 7.1 so all Mi Casa is doing is applying some post processing to derive the channels.

By doing DISCRETE mixes, the audio is laid out... hopefully with a plan, and not "willy-nilly" like "matrixing" the 5.1 soundtracks to 7.1 like our receivers do.

As I said, if anyone knows more than I do about this, PLEASE speak up!

7.1 is for people who are just flat out bored with their money...I listed to the demo's - crap I say, a poor sell. 5.1 is excellent to my ears...nuff said...

I am gonna rent 2 speakers from work to check out if 7.1 is worth the extra money. I just have a few movies among my 180+ titles that are 7.1 but I sure wanna know. So I will take some medium priced speakers before I commit to spending $1000 on some Vienna Acoustics speakers to add to my system

Honestly I think though that currently it's not worth the extra money. There are just too few movies out there.

"Rambo" supposedly sounds great in 7.1 though..

I recently upgraded my system, so it seemed a good time to "future proof" myself by getting a 7.1 receiver and a Paradigm 7 speaker set-up with my JBL subwoofer which I will upgrade later.

There are not many BD releases in 7.1, but I can report that 3:10 To Yuma and Rambo sound fantastic. I also have Pan's Labyrinth and Rush Hour 3 which IMO are not quite as good as the other two titles, but are still a step up from 5.1.

Lionsgate and New Line have embraced the 7.1 format, so hopefully others will follow later.

Why on earth would you waste your money on the 50 now that the 30's bottom is about to drop out and you have the capabilities of decoding everything on the planet? Unless the 2.0 is somehow attractive to you I don't see why you'd need it.

I have no BluRay at all at this time and want to get a 2.0 player. What makes that most ironic is I'm not really interested in BD live or Pic-in-Pic. I just hate the thought that a year or so from now the $50 players will have those features and my pricey (early adoption) player won't.
