Default OK I just saw the unveiling Sony OLED TV, it makes my HDTV looks like an obsolete pos

It's 3mm panel with 1 million to 1 contrast ratio, with real live color

Are you talking about that little a$$ 11 inch for $2500? Yeah...I saw it at the Sony Style store in Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta, and it did make my TV look like sh!t.

It looked nice in the store, but for a screen that small, could you tell the difference between it and a 32" 1080p if you were 2 feet (nose to screen) from the OLED, and 6 feet from the 32" ???? Probably not..... it's easy to make a 11" look good c'mon! I'm sure it's better, but again, it won't matter until they start pumping out the bigger ones (I love how thin it is though, it would make a great screen recessed in the dash of an SUV..... Snoop... you listening??????)

Yeah, keep in mind the smaller the screen, the better it looks to the eye. TV studios always used no more than 20" CRT's in the booths, most were 10's and 12's. Everything looked good on a 12" CRT but put the same image on a 36" and things changed rather drastically.

Anyway, the technology has changed radically since the CRT days and will continue to do so but the basic rule of a small screen is still true. That's why no one bothers to put 1080p in smaller panels. There's no benefit from certain distances away.

The OLED will evolve as will competing technology and then you'll see prices drop pretty quickly. Just wait it out. None of us are silly enough to just jump on everything we see as soon as it comes available - otherwise we all would have bought HD-DVD over Blu', true?

I think that this will be the next thing I buy.. in 10 years.
Although some of those projectors are really nice...

But eventually I will have to get an OLED! (Once they are around 50" for $3k)

Here is a good article about OLED vs. plasma vs. LCD. I want an OLED TV but I may have to wait for many years before a 60" or so will be around today's prices.

A very good snippet (snippet???) from the article.

Trei: While the XEL-1's $2,500 price tag will limit its appeal for now and manufacturing OLEDs involves several patented technologies, which might require costly license fees. Still, large-scale production could eventually lead to OLED displays actually costing less to build than their LCD and plasma counterparts.

Try more like $60,000. I remember when the first Plasma TV's went on sale to the Public, a 720p 50" plasma cost over $50,000. That's been less than 10 years ago and now you can get that same screen for less than $999.

I remember the first plasma TV's showing up for upwards of $25k.

Give it time...

Edit: Too slow with my post about plasma prices.

40" or 42" OLED is about all I need. But I would definately like to see one before buying it. I can wait for now. Besides, gives them time to drop the price.

I saw a History Channel show (probably Modern Marvels) about television, and the future of it...... obviously they're stretching in a few areas..... but they were saying there was a flexible screen technology already available..... they were TWISTING the screen while it played.... very cool. Also they said walls could be PAINTED with a substance that would transmit signals, and you could use television technology to change the colors of your walls with the press of a button....... I think that's a stretch, but my sister has LCD in her windows for automatic tinting, so who would have thought that was possible 20 years ago......

Yeah, but they dropped like a rock in price very quickly. I worked @ CC in the late 90's and I recall selling those plasmas for $14k. The Oprah show actually visited Nashville and they ordered up 7 of them, so they got a $1k-per discount.

Not as big a stretch as you may think. When the movie Red Planet with Val Kilmer came out, and they had those scroll-like digital screens, there was a special on Discovery that showed that technology was already prototyped... it just wasn't touch-sensitive yet. That was what? 10 years ago? There's already glass that can change color and go from transparent to opaque, and it's available right now for home doors and windows, and I think there's a European Mercedes vehicle that has this tech as a moonroof. And Nissan has experimented with paramagnetic iron oxide in their paint that allows you to change the car's color at the push of a button by sending a different electrical current to the panels that affects how they reflect light. Lots of cool tech out there that just isn't broadly/cheaply available to the masses yet.
