I have a Sony STR-DG910 hooked up to a JVC 5.1 package ( Main speakers are large -35hz, satellite centre and surrounds -60hz + a 60w sub). I bought the speakers 7 years ago as part of a JVC HTiB.The problem with the speakers now is during intense action scenes the main/centre speakers start clipping/distorting sound so much I have to turn the volume down. Now I want to know if this could damage my receiver...

Sounds to me like you've cooked the speakers because they probably have a very low wattage handling capacity. It is unlikely you will damage the reciever unless they completely burn out but it's not worth the risk, so get new speakers that can handle a 100 watts peak at least. ![]() |

You may also want to check your bass settings. Satellite speakers in common HTiB can't handle much bass due to the small/ poorly made speaker. The speakers may not be blown, you may just have your bass turned up too high for the speakers. |

HTIB speakers are all very weak, and poor quality (there aren't really any exceptions), and JVC isn't exactly known as a "powerhouse" in the world of audio. I agree with the above sentiments, and would say your speakers are toast.
I'd venture to say your surrounds are fine, so I'd start with Fronts/Center, and build up a new system. have fun! |

Generally, HTB systems are usually 6 ohm if packaged with their own receiver but in any event, the speakers are very small to give you a decent surround effect, letting the small sub' try and fill in the mid-range as well as lower bass response but these systems never come close to even bookshelf speakers and a good sub'. This is especially true when listening in 2 channel like a CD or FM. The sound is tinny. The systems do serve a purpose - people can get the overall effect for a low buck and the speakers are easy to place in a small environment. Foe me, the smallest I'd go is a 10 or 12" high bookshelf system and I'd put a whack of dough into the sub'. That sub needs to be the guts of a system like that.
