Default Cooler/quieter PS3?

I am considering bumping my BDP-S1 player up to the guest room and getting a PS3 for our home theatre. This is to (hopefully) load java/BluRay discs faster, to put Utube on the big screen and to stream music from the home network.

Particularly with the music application, heat and noise are an issue. Is the newest PS3-80gb on skinnier silicon so it is cooler than the more available PS3-40 gb model? IBM announced a shrink to 45nanometer silicon in Feb `08 - any idea if this is in the PS3-80 or is it for later this year?

[My interest up to this point is editing HDV movies on BluRay using PremierePro and DVDit Pro HD so I haven't followed PS3 developments as I might]

There has been nothing said about a production run of the 45nm Cell, and it appears from some testing that has been done by forum members that the newest 80gb PS3 still has the 90nm Cell, or if it has the 65nm chip - it isn't showing it in power consumption.

I am waiting this one out before I buy a second PS3, but a friend just bought the 40gb and its amazing how quiet it is. I have a 60gb PS3 that I had to install in a closet since its used 90% of the time for movies.

anyway, the max fan speed is only when folding at home or after some time of playing games, just playing MP3 or internet surfing doesn't go above lvl 2 that is covered by normal conversation

That's true about the fan speed, but it still may be an annoyance.

For example, my 60gig - even at level 2 with it about 10 feet away is enough to bug me, I guess I just picky though.

I have an Sanyo PLV-Z2 projector mounted on a shelf 2 feet above my head in our viewing position, and I don't hear that at all - so the PS3 was just too much.

For us, an electrical outlet in the closet, run cables through the attic - it works perfectly. I am just mad I didn't do it before.

Still waiting to see if there is going to be a 65nm or smaller 80gig soon before I buy again.

I've found little to no difference between our 40gb and 80gb when running upscaled DVD's or Folding@Home. ..the latter being the culprit for spinning up the fan to the highest level on the 60GB. So even if the 40/80 are drawing different power.. in practice I haven't seen any difference in terms of heat/fan noise. With the 40 and 80 the fan stays on the lowest setting...

The fan on our SXRD t.v can be louder than the 60GB for BD playback.

P.S. We keep our house temp around 70F.

I preformed a test.

Yeah, both of my 60-gig PS3s are so quiet I can only hear them when I get down right next to them. But, I keep my place cool, usually around 69-70 degrees Fahrenheit and don't have any major heat sources around them. When I first upgraded my cable and put the cable box/DVR next to the PS3, I think I heard the PS3 fan for the first time. I didn't realize the DVR would put out so much heat so I didn't think twice about putting it next to the PS3. After rearranging things though, it was back to normal (could no longer hear the PS3).

Both of mine put out a good amount of heat though.

One other thing to keep in mind is the firmware updates.

The Cell has granular power management capabilities .. and as the devs keep gathering more profiling information and knowledge .. that allows them to potentially keep reducing the power envelope despite the hardware being fixed.

I ran F@H for like 15 Hours straight the other day, with my temperature in my living room somewhere between 73-75 Degrees. When I checked the PS3 that morning, the PS3 was no warmer that it always is when playing games or otherwise. I have laptops that get hotter than my PS3 does honestly. even when playing CoD4 with the sound off, or extremely low, I cannot hear the Fan, it's much, much quieter than my FAT PS2

My PS3 makes no noticable noise nor heat.

My cable box on the other hand from Time Warner is a monster!

My USA PS3 60gb gets really loud. Much louder than my UK one. The specs for each machine are not the same though, the USA one has the full ps2 chipset in it, whilst the UK one only has half the ps2 chips in it. Makes a big difference. I can see how it could affect things.

I will buy a USA machine again when PS2 BC is assured and its quieter. Or maybe, I might just buy a 40gb machine and use my old ps2 since 480p upscaled looks better than 480i upscaled on my TV.

I have a 40GB and I don't think that I have ever heard my fan come on! I've even had sessions of 6+ hours straight. It is always used in a temperature controlled room though.

How many fan speeds does the PS3 have? From the time i turn it on to about 10 minutes of use i won't hear anything, but after that i hear a fan kick on. It will stay on this fan speed no matter how long i use it. It's not super annoying, but i do hear it when everything else is quiet. Also, i can play and watch all day and the ps3 barely gets warm.

I usually have the surround on now so I don't hear the fan regardless! UNLESS it goes to top speed. Not much you can do about that but, as a previous poster mentioned, keep the room cool.
