For those that have links blocked at work here is the meat of the article.. "There have been speculations already that the new 40GB model already supports the new smaller and cheaper 65nm Cell. So far this has not been confirmed by Sony or any other unofficial source. Now, the German c't magazine talks about this in its newest Monday edition and actually confirms the 65nm Cell (on the right) being used. It is still unclear for me if this is also true for the RSX. At least c't says so. This would of course explain the lower power consumption that is even listed by Sony, which is about 60 Watt less than the former models. But that's not all, the new model is almost half as loud as the old model making it barely recognizable with its 0.5 - 0.8 Sone. The new revision also features a smaller heatpipe, a revised Southbridge (CXD2984GB) and a battery cell for the system clock." Hopefully we can get official confirmation at some point .. as this may be of interest to some of you that find the current models too noisy in comparison to a standalone. |

Thats weird. The Wall Street Journal printed an article where they said that the PS3 already has the 65nm chip in the 60 and 80 gig models. Its a 45nm chip thats gonna be on the 40 gig. It was the article about Sony selling their chip plant, which makes the Cell, to Toshiba.
I would give you the link but you need a username and password to access it. |

![]() As far as the chip plant..my impression was IBM was able to fulfill their 65nm needs for now and selling the 65nm plant was so they could invest/accelerate? the move to 45nm as part of the cost reduction further down the road. |

I dont know what half as quite would be since mine dont make any noise at all even when there on for 5-8hrs, I take that back if it is DEAD silent & I mean NO NOISE at all & I put my ear up to with in 2'' or so of the right side of the PS3 I came hear A very slight "huming" sound but thats it so if the new 40gig is half as quite as that ,well hell it will be SILENT for sure!!
