Default Opinions on extended warranty?

not sure if this is the right thread to post this in so mods feel free to move it if you need to... i have a samsung ln55c650 which i will have had for a year at the end of this month... so the factory warranty will be expiring and i received a letter in the mail today about an extended warranty plan... it costs $325 for 3 years of coverage... i did have the panel replaced just a few days after i originally bought it but that was due to clouding/flashlighting issues, so it wasn't due to anything out of the blue just breaking down and has been perfect since... i also have an lnt4671f that is 3-4 years old and it is still going strong, no problems at all... granted i haven't used it much at all in the past year since i bought the 55" but it still works perfectly... now that being said, do you think it would be a good idea to get the extended warranty?... i take pretty good care of my stuff so i'm not really worried about it getting physically damaged... but on the other hand if something did break and they had to replace the tv and my model is no longer available i may be able to step up to a better tv for free or alot less than buying it out of pocket... just looking for peoples opinions and/or experiences (specifically with samsung)

Waste of $$ unless you get a really good deal on one, and $325 is NOT a good deal. For more background and information, see the following thread:

It may be worth it for your peace of mind. I have a HDTV that started flashing stripes and thank goodness I bought a four year extended warranty. The repairman said it was a board going bad that would have been very expensive. It might be possible to buy the warranty from the original retailer or maybe even from Amazon that has SquareTrade warranties.

I wouldn't had anything repaired! Evidently, the TV was defected when you've bought it, and you should have returned it, and exchanged it for another one completely, (instead of having it repaired) especially if you've just purchased it. You've bought a defective item, and kept it! As far as your warranty is concern, Samsung have a reputation of having many problems with their products so, an extended warranty may come in handy.

they did replace it, sorry I said panel and meant tv haha... I did some research at that time on the different panels samsung used and I had an aa01 originally which were the problematic ones made by another company... I requested an sq01 which is made by samsung and as I said it has looked great since... their customer service was good to me and I haven't had any mechanical issues (other than the above) with any of their products I've owned so far (2 lcd tvs and a bd player)... the warranty is offered by samsung directly and not by amazon (where I purchased it) if that matters... I'm kind of on the fence about it but it does seem a little high... according to the link provided by the poster above the warranty should be around 10% of the cost of the tv which would come out to $3250 and I paid about half of that for the tv lol

I just used the BB extended warranty to replace a 3 1/2 year old Samsung plasma. I ended up spending $500 out of pocket to get a nicer TV than the one they offered me though. IMO they low-balled me with the TV they offered to replace mine with, but I'm still glad I had it (the warranty) because paying for a new TV would have been a lot more expensive if I didn't have it.

Read near the end of the thread I referenced. You can get a 3 year warranty through Costco for $100. If you're not a member, it will cost you another $35 to join, but still FAR better than anything you'll find elsewhere. At that price, the piece-of-mind is worth it.

I skimmed through that but assumed you had to buy the tv there... so you can get an extended warranty on a product you didn't even get from them?... that seems strange but I might look into that... what does it cover and if you're tv is unrepairable do you have to go through costco to get a replacement?

I have never bought an extended warranty, and never wished I had.

This is what I was thinking! The TV had to be originally purchased from Costco, for their extended warranty to be valid. That's like buying a TV from Best Buy, and buying the extended warranty from Sams!

Again...READ THE LINK.

It's a standard Square Trade warranty, valid on ANY TV, regardless of where it was purchased (as long as you register within 90 days of the original purchase date). I just picked one up last week for my GT30 I purchased through Amazon.

well as I stated in my original post the tv will be a year old at the end of this month so I'm way out of the 90 day period... this is also a manufacturer extended warranty, not through best buy, amazon, costco, etc so that might be why it costs more??

Almost always a waste of money. Most consumer electronics your going to be replacing or throwing away in a few years (especially true if you buying at best buy or similar chain store). High end manufacturers and dealers don't even offer these because their equipment tends to last.
