My ps3 is set
Linear PCM for both options possible, its connected via HDMI to the receiver, onkyo805. I dont know why, but whenever i pop in a blu ray and select the audio from the Movie, it wont pop up, the receiver keeps going to either ALL CH STEREO or MULTICHANNEL, and it sounds like crap. I popped in Saw4 and selected 7.1 DTS HD AUDIO, and ALL CH STEREO still came up. Anyone? Is something wrong on the receiver end? |

When you select LPCM on your PS3, you are setting it to do the decoding. So all your reciever will ever get is a pre-decoded LPCM signal, which will show up as "multichannel". This is what you want. When it says "all channel stereo", you have simply changed the listening mode. Leave your PS3 set to "LPCM" and leave your reciever set to "direct". For games, I will apply some THX processing, but thats it. For movies, I suggest that you leave it on direct. I have a PS3 and the 805 too

The PS3 cannot decode DTS Master Audio tracks, so on Saw IV, the PS3 was decoding the legacy DTS track and sending it to your reciever as a PCM signal, which is why the DTS light did not come on. The PS3 can decode TrueHD though so you should leave it set to "LPCM".
The only way you can get those lights to come on in the reciever is to get a player that can bitstream the new audio codecs. The PS3 cannot, so if you are looking for your reciever to do the decoding, then consider picking up a new BD player. |

If it "sounds like crap" then either you need new speakers or your ears need checked. |

I have a 7.1 setup..
I put it on direct, and linear pcm. I popped in WE OWN THE NIGHT, true hd track. I put it on direct, started the movie, and TRUEHD didnt pop up -_-V on the receiver, only the PCM light. I switched it to bitstream for both options, then restarted the movie, and dolby digital glew bright red on the receiver -_-V But not true hd Last edited by Ice2Dragon; 04-03-2008 at 09:04 PM. |

if the player is decoding, it wont say true hd on the receiver its only getting pcm. press select on the ps3 remote and it will show you what codec its using. multichannel on the receiver is correct. if its saying all channel stereo then change modes

in my experience the only difference between direct and surround buttons on the remote is one is using the audessey settings and the other isnt.

My recommendation -- Select TrueHD on the movie (and let the PS3 do the decode) -- and the receiver should say "Multi Ch." or whatever. If it is a 7.1 source encode -- then you are good. If it is a 5.1 then use the "Surr. Mode" button or "THX Mode" button to selection either "PLIIx" or "Ultra2 Cinema" (respectively) (these two modes allow the 805 to take a 5.1 source and make it into a 7.1 sound output). |

I too have a PS3 and the onkyo 805 (5 speaker setup). When I play a movie, the only choice I have is THX cinema. It doesn't display what format I have set for it (DTS or Dolby). The other choices don't come up, such as game mode, llx, or the other 5 speaker choices. Once I turn off the PS3, those modes are now available.
How do I fix this??!!! |

Not entirely positive on this, but if you check all the possible outputs in the audio settings area of the PS3, you should have more audio options available on the receiver.

As for why it's saying THX cinema, I'll admit I'm stumped unless it's getting a 2.0 channel stereo signal. In that case it'd switch to one of those listening modes to simulate a surround sound environment. *edit* Wait, am I reading that you have 5 speakers and not a 5.1 system? I wonder if that's what's causing it, as it sees that you don't have a true surround setup and is downmixing or choosing a 2.0 option. Curious, when you play a movie on the PS3 and hit the display button, what audio codec does it show? |

First, make sure that in your PS3 settings, all audio options are checked off in the "Sound Settings" and then "Audio Output Options" and then "HDMI" and then "Manual." Next, make sure that your remote is set for receiver functionality by pressing the "RECEIVER" button listed under the "REMOTE MODE" section of the remote. Then, once you have the movie playing, press the "SURR" button located under the "LISTENING MODE" section of the remote. That should bring it out of "THX Cinema" mode and into. Like mentioned above, the PS3 will always send a PCM signal to your receiver, so "MULTI CH" listed on your receiver's front panel means that you are getting the full sound spectrum (that is, so long as you have selected the proper soundtrack from the Blu-ray or DVD menu). So, just to clarify... Onkyo front panel reads "MULTI CH." Press the select button on the PS3 controller during video playback and see what audio track is listed to the left of the top right information bar. That is EXACTLY what you are hearing despite the Onkyo stating "MULTI CH." Any other questions? Last edited by Petra_Kalbrain; 06-29-2008 at 10:26 AM. |
